I have a 2020 SR5 4 Runner with about 20K miles on it. Started the motor this morning and a warning light came on telling me to go to the dealer. Anybody had problems with the PRNL switch. They pronounced it as the PERNAL switch. Never heard of it. Cleared the code and told me that my check engine light would come on but it was OK to drive until they get and replace this switch. Sound reasonable?

    What was the actual code?

The dealership never told me or showed me what the actual code was. They were able to reset it so the flashing on the dash along with the message was no longer showing. The rep referred to the switch as the Park, reverse neutral drive switch.

Had the switch replaced today. Drove the vehicle about 10 miles and it threw the check engine light again. Same problem. Back to the dealer and they took the truck back in and reset the computer and supposedly test drove it and assured me it was good to go. Got about 500 yards down the road and it threw the check engine code again. Back to the dealer and they put it back up and reset the computer and told me the switch was slightly misaligned by about 1/4”. This sounds like BS to me. I cannot believe that a misalignment of 1/4” would cause this to happen BUT they assured me AGAIN everything was good to go. Told the service writer I would see her again. Got home safely. We will see tomorrow.

It only took me 4 1/2 hours at the dealership to accomplish this but I am still not really sure they fixed the problem.

    Where exactly is this switch?
Is is under the vehicle on the transmission?
Or inside the cab under the gear shift lever?
    Got a part number?

It’s mounted on the drivers side of the transmission. Not sure of part number. There is a U Tube video showing how to replace.

Under the vehicle, side of the transmission. Had mine go south on my Tacoma. First symptom is generally hard to move shift lever. I coated the snot out of the one on my T4R when I bought it with Fluid Film to prevent issues.
