The manual that came with my 2022 says to use oil with a ILSAC GF-6A grade but the Costco Kirkland oil is only rated for GF-5. The Mobil 1 oil Costco carries is rated at GF-6 though. I know nothing much changed mechanically on these trucks but I wanted some clarification.

If the manual states GF6, I’d use GF6. I think it is the new higher standard for oil.

My '22 4runner also calls for ILSAC GF6 oil. Think of it as the new best synthetic oil for today's turbocharged small displacement engines. It's supposed to help against LSPI- (low speed pre-ignition) that can occur on todays direct injected turbo engines. My '22 4runner 4.0l v6 is neither a turbo or direct injected but that's what the owner's manual calls for so that's what it gets. Why not give it the best out there. I do my own oil changes and due to warranty concerns use only GF6 specified oil and OEM oil filters. I'm using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum oil along with OEM TRD performance Oil filters every 5000k and it works for me. This is touchy subject with a lot of people and all I can say is what ever floats your boat everyone seems to have a different opinion.

So after reading the past posts I decided to get the Mobil 1 at Costco, it is also on sale from 3/9/22 until next month if anybody wants to stock up. I'm assuming for now that the Kirkland brand hasn't gone through the certification process yet for GF-6.

The tgmo oil at the dealer is only 6 dollars a quart. High in molly. Not much reason to use anything else

Nothing has changed with the engines in the last 5 or so years that requires different oil. My 2018 owner manual says “Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil”.

Toyota just keeps up with the current oil performance standards in their publications. The latest ILSAC GF-6A covers all legacy viscosity grades, and is backward compatible to our 5th Gens. ILSAC GF-6B is for 0W-16 only, to alleviate LSPI, and is not backward compatible.

So if you have ILSAC GF-5 on hand, use it.
