Hello folks. I’m a new owner of a 2022 ORP. It’s my first new vehicle in quite a while and I’m busy clawing my way out of the dark ages. In my reading on this forum I have come across a few aftermarket black box modules that enhance the function and performance of our vehicles. I’m wondering what else might be out there and I’m hoping you might be able to add to the list of what I’ve found. So far I’ve seen:

    Accessorides Remote Start Kit
    https://accessorides.com/products/2020-toyota-4runner-remote-starter-plug-play-kit-for-push-start

    Sprint Booster Throttle Response Controller
    https://www.sprintboostersales.com/SprintBooster.cfm?pa=List&zsb=0&sc1=1327&sc2=1995

    Pedal Commander Throttle Response Controller
    https://trail4runner.com/2017/12/31/throttle-response-controller-5th-gen-4runner/

DR_KDSS Control Unit/Switch (improves suspension articulation over 12 mph on KDSS-equipped vehicles.)
    https://drkdss.com/

Brite Box Fog Light Controller (allows fog lights to be used with high beams)
    https://www.aspireautoaccessories.com/product-page/the-brite-box-for-toyota-4runner

Anytime Backup Camera (allows use of rear camera while not in reverse gear.)
    https://www.anytimebackupcamera.com/

Carista OBDii Adapter and Smartphone App (in addition to code reading/resetting functions, facilitates modification of many vehicle settings otherwise only accomplished by the dealer. My personal favorites: disable persistent seat belt reminder chime, roll down side windows with long press of unlock button on smart key.)
    https://caristaapp.com/

If you know of any others, or different versions of the ones above, please add them to the list.

    Cheers,

    Spalding

Edited 5/17/22: added 4 items to the list.

Hey ya also got a 22’ T4R and was looking to improve on the throttle lag. Basically using S4 to compensate. Been seeing good reviews on PC n SB but not so much on EVC or TG=throttle grenade. Be interesting to see if anything else is out there.

They all do the same thing.(adjust voltage, no rocket surgery or brain science) Get one and put it in. And no, none will fail and cause you to your death. Which mode you like .02% that the other, or what one give you others dont (it has Bluetooth!!! That, i set like 2 times a year,.....) or whatever, aka cost is up to you.

There you have it - a throttle response controller would be my choice for first add-on. I have the PC but I understand the Sprint is also a good unit.

Well I got my first black box add-on. A Dr_KDSS controller. I installed it during the week and I’ll be testing it out in the local mountains this weekend.

I’m still on the fence about the throttle response controller. I think it’s no accident that the throttle is set up the way it is, and that when the truck is bouncing around on a rough stretch of road, and me along with it, the “lazy” throttle helps keep the vehicle under control while my foot is bouncing up and down on the pedal. Do those of you with a throttle re-mapper turn it off when you’re off road?

Yes and also when backing up to hook up my trailer - it’s about a 1-2 second transition (off/on). Pretty sure you would like the throttle response from the controller - it’s the best $300 investment I’ve made to date.

It's interesting that you got the KDSS on/off switch with no reservation, but are skeptical about the throttle controller, which can also be turned off and on. Both devices alter the way the vehicle was set up from the factory, so...

I see them as different. Maybe I’m wrong but the KDSS switch adds a functionality that is lacking without it (i.e. open valves at speeds greater than 12 mph) while the function of the throttle control can be mimicked with an aggressive right foot. No?

Yes, you’re correct. For me though it is a mental thing no doubt - I just love the leaping response from barely moving the pedal. My brain is just conditioned to resist putting the pedal to the metal to achieve its full performance.

Actually, I’m not sure if this is completely true. Someone correct me if I’m wrong, but I was under the impression that the throttle controllers actually change the curve of the (vehicle-set) electronic fly-by-wire, not just the percentage of pedal pressed.

For instance, I don’t use a throttle controller, and it doesn’t matter how fast my foot hits the floor, the electronic signal is going to translate that for the vehicle and only slowly unroll the throttle (thus avoiding spinning out off-road or on boat ramps, etc). I’ve had the most difficult time getting the 4Runner to do donuts in even loose dirt/gravel, and assumed the “nanny” fly-by-wire was the culprit. Though, “it wont do donuts” is hardly a justification for me to get one of these… thus far :)

That's been the main argument posed by throttle controller haters since they came out. That may be true at WOT, but I can't see anyone's foot mashing ability being as calibrated as any of the TCs.

I think you guys are convincing me. I think I’ll put a throttle controller on the to-do list. It will be a little while though, as I have a couple of other things in the pipeline. (Carista OBD dongle and RSG sliders.)

Welcome! I will throw in another vote for PC or SB as a throttle control. I wasn't sure about the PC, but WOW, I should have installed it the day I bought the truck. What a difference in responsiveness and drivability.

Is there a plug-and-play version under $300? Then I’d put it on the list for sure!
