650 miles in, still can't get above ~14MPG

In my experience, some cars’ computer MPG estimates are very optimistic. aka lies. My Subaru WRX consistently reported a good 1.5-2 MPG better than I actually got when I did the math at the pump. I’ve seen this on other cars too. My 2020 4R is actually good in this regard. It’s usually dead on or optimistic by only about 0.25 MPG. A few times I’ve seen it optimistic by about 0.5 MPG, but I’ve also seen it slightly pessimistic. So in short I think Toyota has programmed it to be honest.

That said, we know the speedometer over reports your speed by 1-2 percent. Which says to me that the odometer over reports miles driven by the same amount. Which says to me that both the computer and your hand calculated MPG numbers are inherently optimistic by the same amount.

So when I see it read e.g., “20” MPG I assume the true MPG is roughly 19.5.

Best thing to do is change the digital display between the speedo and tach to how fast you are going and never mind mpg. Enjoy the 4Runner!

 

I’m not worried about fuel economy as stated. Just wanted to make sure nothings up with the truck

 

Wait till the first oil change recommendation before judging mpgs. By then spring/summer blended fuels will be out and everything should be better.

 

I've got 700 miles on my ORP. At 300 miles I switched out the wheels/tires to TRD Pro wheels and Nitto Ridge Grapplers(stock size) but MPG on both wheel and tire setups have been around 14mpg city driving and 18MPG hwy.
