To those who tinted their front windows to match the rear windows, what percentage did you use?

In Washington state you cannot legally tint the front side windows as dark as the rears. I went as dark as is legal 35%

I am in MD now which allows me 35%; will be moving to SC next year which allows up to 27%. I just wanted to make sure that the front and rear windows will have the same amount of darkness If I go for 35%, will the front and rear have the same level of tint?

20 fronts, 20 rears over factory tint and C pillar and hatch 5 over factory tint. I can still see just fine in the rear view mirror.

As of now, the lowest I can go is 35%. Will the front and rear windows have the same level of darkness if I put 35% in the front?

No clue what level it is, dealership did it before I took delivery. I like it a lot especially in the summer.

Only one concern, I have gotten in the habit of rolling my window down when turning onto a dark road at night in an effort to see oncoming traffic.

Why you ask? Because apparently the new fad for drivers is to drive at night with no headlights!

I wish the cops would enforce this.

My place told me the match was 30 percent. Depending on how vehicle is parked though it looks a shade lighter. My guess is it’s due to more light coming through windshield hitting fronts versus rear.

i just went in and asked the shop to match the rears. I do believe you are correct with 30….and it is a touch lighter

This is mine after it was done in partly sunny day. If this gives you sense.

I may have to go with 35% since it is the darkest I can go with here in MD. Thanks guys.

The shop who did mine say 20% would get the fronts to match. Looks close to me.

    Lot of misinformation.

Rears are 27% +/- 3%. I scoped them with the tint meter at work.

Limo tint is 5% for whoever brought that up.

    35% will be noticably lighter.

My fronts are at 20% and that's about the best match you can get. They are a hair darker than the rear when viewed at the perfect angle and lighting, but generally they look pretty close.

Old pic but the tint is as described, 20% front, factory rear:

Pretty sure stock rear is 27%. Most shops will have a tint % tester and can match it near perfectly.

I have a very dark tint on my '19 4Runner and have come to hate it. It's great for keeping the interior cooler and for blocking UV rays, but it sucks for driving in anything other than clear daylight conditions. I'm getting all the tint ripped out and going with something lighter.

I learned this the easy way when in college. My roommate wanted dark tint, so I let him be the Guinea pig and install the 5% tint on his windows before I installed any. He always had to roll his windows down in the dark to see if anything was coming before turning. I went with 20% and was happy. It’s on the verge of being too dark at night, but with the strong sun in Colorado I like it during the day.

A guy on the other forum measured the stock windows and posted the results.

The stock fronts measured 77 VLT, rears 32, back 29. I tinted my fronts by an additional 50% to approximately match the rears. They are a little lighter when viewed from the side due to the windshield letting in so much light. But that probably is for the best in CA to not draw any attention from LEOs.

Dealer blacked mine out with 35% over factory in all rear glass and did two sheets of 35% on the fronts. 35% of 35% is roughly 12% and I love the look. It’ll come in handy especially in the Summer here in TX
as far as visibility goes, it’s somewhat dark at night. Overall it’s not bad at all since it isn’t cheap tint.

Pretty sure WA state tint darkness minimum for front side window is 24% (percentage of reflectiveness the windows min is 35% for front side windows and back side windows.)

Maybe hijacking - but is the factory tint on the 2021s also heat resistant, i.e., reduce heat coming through from the sun? I'm getting my front door windows tinted later this week but havent talked to the shop about different material. If the factory tint isnt very good at reducing heat infiltrating and the windshield aint tinted, should I go expensive on the tint on the front doors?

How can you tell what percentage tint you have other than an installer telling you what they put on? Just wondering what’s on mine. I bought out of state in NV which has different tint laws from CA. I’m pretty sure I’m too dark but doubt I will ever get pulled over because of it, since CA cops don’t seem to do shit anymore.

I would say the best way is to scope it with a tint meter.

If you know any cops who mainly work traffic, they likely have one. A tint shop can probably scope it for you, most of them have meters.

Failing that most of the big tint manufacturers have a spot online where they have representative samples of tint and you can probably do a "hold up the computer screen and see" comparison to get you close. Or... post an image here and one of these nerds will be able to tell you by looking!

I've never had a vehicle tinted, but I'd like to get the front done to match the rear. NM allows up to 20%, so I'll see what a tint shop says. Do they apply tint without having to disassemble any of the door? (I know nothing about the tint process)
