I used one on my other car. It sucks. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's a pain in the butt. Use a cable.

Okay, I’m old. What are the advantages of car play? I actually don’t like it at all so far, but I will admit, I’m probably not using it correctly

It is like an extension of your phone. Primarily what I use it for is just maps and music. It'll show maps on the big screen really, instead of your phone. Removes the purpose of having your phone on a mount.

I use Android Auto but they are pretty similar (although personally I think AA is better when I compare my wife's Apple setup to it).

It's great to be able to have Google maps with live traffic set up on the display. Much better than the factory GPS IMO. Pandora Radio sets up seamlessly and you can control all the features from the display. You can essentially "mirror" the phone display (with some apps not working due to tech issues) so it's nice to have a much bigger screen to manipulate.

It is annoying to have to plug in, so I only use it for trips where I'm going to be maybe an hour + in the vehicle.

I am probably gonna have to get a shitbox commuter car to supplement the fleet and if it's an older one I intend to install an aftermarket stereo that is AA compatible, I like it that much for longer range drives.

You know, I'm new here and have been reading the forum for years. But this is the second post that you posted in the audio section about software development that has nothing to do with helping the OP. You trying to sell something? LOL

OP, there are a couple of wireless adapters that I've come across on the Tundra forum that people use with great success. I'll try and see if I can find out what they are.

That would be great. I like taking advantage of android auto with my phone but hate having to keep it plugged in constantly. I've had my 4runner less than a month so I keep looking for ways to take advantage of music and stuff on my phone. I hate having to keep it tethered to the dash. I started to try and migrate my saved locations from waze to Google. I am tired of waze constantly asking me to report and confirm traffic stuff.

I have read up on some of these wireless android auto devices. There are aa wireless, carsifi and Motorola is due to come out with one at the end of the month. Motorola MA1. You can find it on their website and can order it on Amazon. They all go for about $90 give or take a few bucks. The one thing I fear about the Motorola is it looks like the cable is hardwired to the unit. The other ones the box is thicker but they just and a USB port to plug into. I ordered the Motorola and will post how it works when I get it.

My Motorola device came today. It works pretty well. I am concerned about durability with hardwired connections. Time will tell.

That's awesome..!! I think you can easily use a double side tape and stick it somewhere for cleaner look.

    Questions -

    1. What music player you use? VLC or any other?
    2. Any chance of playing videos on your phone? (or Youtube?)
    3. Are you able to scroll the current playing song forward and back using steering controls?
    4. Can you select next and previous songs from steering controls?
    5. Can you change local music path by album or folder or any other way you have stored?

Just trying to see if I could get rid of my usb music storage to just my phone.

    Thanks in advance.

I have mainly been using pulsar app to play music but I have only been using it since buying my 4runner. I downloaded it when I read it worked with android auto specifically. I also played with Samsung music and vlc. It seems the android auto specifically does music. I can't get it to stream video regardless of which app I use even if I use the wired connection. Steering controls do work for volume and fast forward and rewind. Using the pulsar app I can sort by artist, album or folder. For that I need the head unit screen. I made a folder of ripped concert dvds and videos and have been mainly playing those lately. I also have about 800 cds that I helped a friend rip years ago. I loaded many on my SD card. I'm still trying to figure out how to stream from my home plex server. I ordered a 6 inch elbow cable and a magnet mount to position the dongel better and make it more secure in one of the cubbies. I agree I do not like the way it just hangs there. I am concerned about stress on the connections on each end since they are hardwired and don't just plug in. I also played with navigation and both Google maps and waze work fine wirelessly.

Yep that's what she said!! So I tuck
That would bug the shit out me personally. I would pull the panel off and tuck that inside and plug the hole with a cover, another USB, light bar switch or passenger ejection button. But that's just me.

I peeled it off once I got a small cable extension and a magnet mount to keep it from flopping around. Trying to make sure nothing screws up the cables since they are hardwired.

The Motorola unit looks pretty good but it mentions that it works with 5G and my phone is not 5G. Just a thought.

It works really well. My wife and I had trouble when having both of our phones configured. I am thinking about getting another one for my 4Runner. Currently it is in her Sienna.

Would the piece that says "Motorola" fit in that small shelf on the left of the USB without twisting the wire in a crazy way? I find that spot pretty useless, and I was considering getting one of these.

I got this one. First got one for my GF's Lexus.. .after she give it a good 6 month test, I got one for my 4Runner. Works great. No issues. Occasionally it takes a few minutes to connect, but nothing major. Sure is nice to not need to plug my phone in and find a place to put it.

Also, VERY plug-n-play easy to set up. It first in either of the two "cubbies" near the Usb connector. it's very small.
