Put my 4runner in the mud for the first time today and it was a beast. Dang thing is awesome. On the other hand, every time I hit a mudhole, the steering and brake pedal made noise and acted sort of weird. I thought it was due to traction control, but I turned it off and it still did it. It is a 2021. Is this normal?

The traction control must be turned off while stopped in order to completely shut it off. You have to hold it down for about 5 seconds while stopped.

It also could just be the ABS, which can't be defeated.

Edit: I'm not a big mud fan, mostly due to the clean-up. But, it sure is fun!

Yeah I didn't even think about that one. That is probably more than likely what it is. Thanks man.

Yeah, probably traction control. Only way to really turn it off is to go into 4lo; even pressing and holding the button, once you hit a certain speed it tends to kick back on.

Unless it changed after 2019, it does not. I can turn it off in 4hi and do donuts all day in a snowy parking lot. It should only turn back on if you defeat it momentarily.

I wonder if it might have at some point? My 2019 trdor, it would always kick back on and kill whatever fun I was trying to have. Might as well have installed a big bright blinking indicator that said "Fun Detected, Deploying Anti-Fun Maneuvers". If I turned it off, then went into a skid or donut right away, it would sometimes stay off for a bit... but when I came out of it would come back on. Or if I turned it off, and drove for a little bit first, then tried to slide, I'd find it was already back on. Maybe 35mph was the trigger? Not sure. Just know I often failed at snow related shenanigans in it.

There is a speed it will turn back on if not completely disengaged. I think it's lower than 35, but not sure.

I bought my '19 in January of '19. I can totally defeat traction control.

Now I'm curious if something changed. I feel sorry for anyone who can't actually turn off traction control. It's sooo fun. :burnrubber:

I was curious about this myself the other day when trying to have a little fun in the snow and having it turn back on unexpectedly on me. I think Thatbassguy is correct... according to my manual it says it will not kick back on if you turn it off completely while stopped (and in Park I believe). I haven't tried this to confirm but I assume it behaves as described in the manual.
