Another tire thread

This has probably been discussed numerous times but I wasn't able to find a direct comparison on this site. I'm looking for feedback from individuals that have run both the ko2 and the duratrac. With the tire options where we get our tires from, these are the leading contenders They have similar weights in the sizes that I'm looking at and I have heard good and bad things about both. We get a mixture of weather here butnot crazy amounts of snow. We do take an annual ski trip to Colorado every year and the weather can change in a minute up there. I have Geolander X-AT tires on my pickup but they are absolutely terrible on anything wet and we are wanting a better all around tire for the 4runner. Any feedback would be amazing. Thanks.

 

Duratrac is better on snow and ice.
KO2 is not good as Duratrac on snow and ice. But KO2 has better grip on trails gravel / sand / little muddy trails.

Duratrac is noticeably noisier than KO2.

For me it is very hard to pick as on road on snow and ice days Duratrac give me little better grip but rest of the time KO2 is really good.

 

I liked the duratracs better on road, off-road the KO2’s.

 

Duratracs hands down the worst tire Ive ever run and only tire Ive not felt safe in my own vehicle before. I will absolutely do my utmost to steer people towards better options, KO2 included (for the most part).

 

I noticed Duratrac wasn't gripping well on trails compared to KO2 and wasn't too happy about the noise level. but was little happy to see better grip on snow.

I will never deny that someone else cant have a positive experience, but in the spirit of giving OP multiple perspectives, here I am. When I had them offroad theyre...OK... but on road theyre loud AF and laughably bad in anything but a straight dry line. I dont trust an AT tire that isnt good at the easiest terrain- a dry asphalt road. Personally I think there are myriad better options for relative purported traction, longevity, etc. Falken Wildpeaks, Toyo AT3s, Cooper ST MAXX (my all time favorite), Kumho RoadVenture, General AT3s, Nittos...
But that is my opinion and experience and I think the best way for one to learn is doing it themselves

 

I have both mentioned tires on different wheels. I have 255/75/17 SL Duratracs on OEM SR5 wheels which I am using now for winter driving. I like them for winter driving.

I also have KO2's 265/70/17 "6 ply" on my OEM TRD OR wheels. I ran those last winter & they also worked well for me, but I am favoring the "pizza cutter" Duratracs more for snow driving. I will swap over to the KO2's at the end of March & will be doing more off-road driving then. I like more plys for off-road protection.

 

It sounds like the duratrac mainly just gains an edge in snow performance. I looked at the falkens but they are about 10 pounds heavier in the 285/70r17 than the ko2 and a about $40 or so more a tire. Sounds like I will probably get the ko2s since we don't do any serious snow driving unless we get dumped on while we are skiing

 

Falkens. Great in snow and ride smooth as can be, with no noise on asphalt.
