Would I regret owning a 4Runner?

There are many who are going to lose thousands once the vehicle market straightens it self out. All those market adjustments will be lost value for the consumer.

 

I totally agree with particularly in you pay substantially more than MSRP. What I was trying to convey is I think in the near term (1 year of less) I dont think you're going to lose much money if you are able to purchase a new 4R at MSRP. Obviously the more you pay the more you are subject to lose.

I think most of us that have purchased a new 4R within the last 12 months stand to at least break even if we were to get rid of them given current market conditions is my point.

My point to the OP was if he did like the 4R after a while given current market conditions I think the 4R's residual value will at least get him most of his money back.

Again this is just my opinion. I am assuming the OP is not going to go pay $75k for a new Pro being a family guy that is another ball game.

 

My two cents....
If you are the analytical type looking at features and value those most, get the F150.
It will be more modern and check more boxes.
If you are more driven by feeling, test drive a 4Runner and decide. My 2021 Venture lacks many of the modern comforts but I just like it better. Everything negative said here is true to varying degrees of individual perception but sometimes that just doesn't matter as much as how it makes you feel when you are driving it.

My rationalizing of some of the shortcomings mentioned.
MPG, not great but that not that far off from anything as capable.
Power, I find that it moves adequately when in stock form. Bigger, heavier tires will drain the life out of it.
5 speed, yes more gears would help acceleration and MPG but compared to many 8-10 speed autos it downshifts much faster and doesn't leave you hanging with nothing while the ECU is trying decide between going down two gears or five. I stomp it and it downshifts and goes.
Infotainment, it sucks.Use Carplay or Android Auto.
The soft suspension, yes it wallows and nosedives but it is so comfortable. If you have bumpy, crappy streets you'll love the way a 4R rides.

 

Our 2017 Limited Platinum has 360 cameras. I’d imagine the 4th gen Platinums have that option.

I test drove about 3 different F150's before buying my 4Runner. The 5.0 was a dog. The 3.5 was nice but spendy.
Ultimately I wanted a vehicle to go off road with and the F150 would be a little too big.

I'm happy with my 4Runner.

 

If you are considering a full size pickup, get a Tundra. I've owned three and never had any issues at all with them and enjoyed their reliability, power and smooth, stable ride.

I just replaced a F150 with my new 22 TRD Pro... 2016 Crew Cab, Sport, 4X4 with the twin turbo V6.

First.. I do NOT think you'd regret owning a 4Runner. It has a TON going for it... namely, reliability and a great set of features for off roading and daily commuting.

Second... You also would very likely NOT regret getting a F150. Mine was fantastic. I put 218K miles on it, zero issues. It had more room, more power, and got better MPG than the 4 Runner. I had a bed-cover for hauling things that I didn't want to get wet, but it wasn't fool-proof. And yes, the F150 - compared to the 4Runner - is HUGE. It's a beast to park, has a horrible turning radius, and is simply kind of cumbersome to maneuver in tight traffic.

Finally, I think that I probably had very good luck with how reliable mine was. I was NOT expecting to get that many trouble-free miles out of a Ford. I got lucky. Conversely, I FULLY EXPECT to get more carefree miles on my 4Runner. It's just part of owning a Toyota product.

If you don't absolutely need the bed, and slightly less leg room and a few less MPG will be okay for you, I recommend going with a 4Runner. The odds would be in your favor for less $$ for maintenance and repairs, higher reliability, and much better resale/trade value down the road.

It's kinda like the 30-06=doesn't stand out in any one area but does everything well!!

 

I rented a 2019 F-150 Lariet with the V8 to take to our cabin, 3 hours of highway, 1 hour of dirt road. It was a beautiful truck, comfortable and powerful, only had like 200 miles on it. I pushed it a little on the twisty dirt road into out place. By the time I was a 1/4 mile from our cabin, it was making a very bad smell from somewhere.
After I parked, someone noticed a thin line of oil leading from the truck to a a spot couple hundred yards up the road. I looked under the truck and saw a 1" stick poking out of the aluminum transmission oil pan, and a big puddle of oil underneath. Truck started fine, but of course transmission torque converter just slipped. Had to have it towed out, cost me $400 because it was 17 miles from the pavement and AAA only does paved road tows for free.
The shop it was towed to replaced the oil pan and refilled the tranny with ATF. I figured that shouldn't be too expensive (Enterprise Damage Waver wouldn't cover me due to it being a violation of their Terms, because I took it on a dirt road). The truck had mostly coasted a short distance as it slowly peed ATF out, then parked, should be ok, right?. The mechanic thought so too, until he drove it. He said it made some bad shifts, so had to tear it down. He said the transmission had all kinds of warped plates due to overheating, and needed to be replaced...no WAY that was caused by me coasting a couple hundred yards with a tranny mostly full. But, the stick in the oil pan meant there was no way for me prove I didn't drive it a longer distance with no oil and to question the real reason the 6 month old transmission was toast. I have since spoken to a few people that said the Ford bazillion speed transmissions have been less that perfect. I'm still paying that effing Ford transmission off :-(.

 

I think people who recently bought a 2019 or '20 and paid the same as a new 2022 will feel even worse, hate to say.

 

My primary reason for owning three 4Runners, ( two 3rd gens & one 5th gen ) is reliability and resale. Any pros/cons are over looked. Also, as far as I'm concerned, the less tech in a vehicle, the better. I am controlling the vehicle by not being stupid. No subsitute for common sense and safety. As for mpg...oh well.
Oh, and I've owned 3 F-150's and never used the bed that much. As for hauling things, I have a utility trailer.

 

Only at the gas pump! Otherwise you will absolutely love it with no regrets!

 

Then there is that one thing the 4Runners have had since Day One, that you will not find on any other vehicle made today, except on a Toyota Sequoia and Tundra - A roll down back window .

 

Depends if you bought it as an investment financially or an investment in enjoyment! Figure I'm 72 and our 2019 has ~25K miles (we put 4K on it last fall). I figure it will outlast me.

maybe they should make the tires from those long balloons clowns use to make animals. It would save weight, wouldnt it?

Does your own car insurance cover any of this damage? You would think it would.

It truly was a slow walked, horrible luck disaster...at first Enterprise said they'd cover it. But when they found out it was 17 miles out a dirt road, something we couldn't hide, they changed their tune. We don't carry much insurance on our old vehicles, so we were out of luck there. I even used our Costco Visa card, because they said it added Damage Coverage on rentals. When I called, they said they had literally JUST dropped that coverage from their card agreement two weeks prior to us renting the truck. The "good news" was Enterprise set me up with a $100/month, interest free, payment plan. Yay.
My wife didn't want me to take our 4Runner because she hates driving my beat up old Dodge pickup when I'm gone. It would never happened in the Toyota with all the skid plates...worst thing we've ever had happen on those roads in 16 years was a flat tire .

They dropped it when they first brought out the 2nd Gen Tundras but brought it back by popular demand. This makes no sense.

 

This will be my last 4R if that goes on the 6th Gen.

 

LOL! Reminds of me of my smoking days...I loved my wing window in my pickup for the same reason.
BTW, if you have a dog, they love those roll down back windows too!

 

And wrangler has many many QC issues not reliable at all.

 

I'll give you three reasons why to buy a 4runner.

 

For what it’s worth I just purchased my first 4Runner. I have no regrets…

 

To much tech unfortunately in new cars , and trucks now …this is why I'm very pleased with my 2019 4runner, gas is pretty much the only Con for this legend not to bad though , which i can definitely live with

 

If one needs all that tech to get along, then they have no business driving! Be alert and drive safely!

 

Various security classes have taught me one thing: Situational awareness is the primary key!

 

A lot of the tech is mandated safety stuff, some is to pamper people into buying one brand of car over the competition. It's not all bad.
