I have a Toyota 4 Runner that is not starting. I have a new starter, a new fuel pump that has been replaced. My battery is still good and under warranty. I've not been able to start it. My local mechanic did say I may need a new crankshaft sensor and a new camshaft sensor but I havent been able to get those parts yet. I'm on a slim budget right now. Just wanted to reach out and see what anyone could tell me about why my vehicle will not start. I just found my keys to it thank God.

What do you mean it won't start?

When you turn the key what happens?

    What do you hear?

Why did you think the starter was bad?

If your mechanic took a look at it and recommends those parts, it seems when you are trying to start it, that the car turns over and over but just won't fire up?

Nic1996Toy, I'm pasting your DM to me here for everyone to see...

So when you say "I hear the electronics"...what does that mean? Are you just hearing clicks? Are you hearing the engine turning over?

If you are *NOT* hearing the engine turning over ("RRRR RRRR RRRR RRRR"), then you have an issue from your battery to your starter...*NOT* a camshaft or crank sensor. You replaced the starter and battery...so I'd assume battery cables or their terminals are probably going bad. I had this issue. The car would only make "click" sounds when turning the key.

If the engine *IS* turning over, the computer now needs a few pieces of info to try to start...crank\cam sensors need to report that the crank and cams are in time, and the fuel pump needs to be supplying fuel and the ECU needs to actually be working. You did replace the fuel pump so I'm assuming that fuel is probably not an issue, but there is a fuel regulator I think that could be an issue. I don't think coils or spark plugs would cause a no-start. It would more likely run badly once started or be a bit hard to start.

Did your mechanic friend actually look at the vehicle? Or just go by your description? If he physically looked at it, I would assume, he tried starting it and heard it turning over but not starting. This would indeed indicate one of those sensors might be bad.

BUT! I would not buy parts until you know what the issue may be. Those sensors don't often go bad and the best way to get it sorted is really to take it to someone who can get a waveform of the crank\cam sensors and see if there are any irregularities. If the wave form looks wrong, replace them and check the toothed sprog on the crank.

Here is a vid with a crank no-start where the issue where he diags things fast with a wave form reader (spoiler it was the toothed sprocket on the crank):

At 1:30 does your car crank like that?

Also, being a 1996, what engine and transmission do you have?
