Best explanation video of Toyota Suspension

This guy is pretty technical, but he literally breaks down a Toyota suspension component by component. If you're a car nerd, this video is pretty sweet. I'm not very detailed oriented, but I still enjoyed his video since he explains it in a very simple way.

I'll have to check it out. I'm thinking of upgrading my suspension soon, so it would be good to get a little bit more familiar with it. I've only worked on solid axle vehicles, I've never messed with a Toyota IFS before.

Freaking genius. Love this video. He is like the Yoda of suspension.

 

I have a 2” lift on the GX right now and thought about going to 3” but after watching these I’m sticking with the 2” lift. Crazy how you can lose wheel travel with more lift.

 

I like how he used Ironman FCP suspension. I am set at roughly 2-2.5 inches which means I am maxed out for travel without going long travel. Better than stock but not by much. I will say the on-road behavior is better with aftermarket suspension. Off-road I feel better I won’t overheat the shocks. So taking that into account I am happy with my decision.

 

I am running the Ironman 4x4 Stage III Foam Cell 2" lift, and I am forever impressed with its off-road capability. They are not as well known here in the states as they are in Australia, but let me tell you, they are just as good as anything else out there. The UCA's that come with the truck are overkill to be quite frank, but then again that was their intent. To over-build the purchased components for the best reliability on trail.

(Oddly enough.... their Nitro Gas suspension I hear is quite the opposite and is not recommended, go figure......)

Usually they run a 25% off promo, and to get such a beefy suspension for around 2K is one of the best steals in the off-roading world today. I cant recommend Ironman 4x4 enough.

 

Yep I am with you 100% on that. They did good R&D from my knowledge on the FCP. Super happy with them. For $2500 I got a lot from Ironman.

I can’t find a deal like that anymore from them. Happy I got such a good deal when I did.

 

Dude, that winch is one of the only ones that can breathe underwater. $750 alone, that is a massive deal!!

I watched that one and while I would like to go long travel to get the suspension travel. I did the cost for a Dirt King and it was $7,200+ and that is for everything related to suspension. That does not include the cost of wider fender flares, rear wheel spacers and fender flares, paint for the fender flares, cost of replacement parts go up, cost of a bunch more stuff. I was like… for all this work I might as well go do a SAS and have more reliability and better off-road performance.

 

Agreed, usually, you do not need to upgrade LCA's unless you are doing bonafide rock-crawling or trails rated difficult/extreme. A proper lift and tires are enough for most off-road enthusiasts.

The video made it pretty clear as to why my setup is not desirable as many here have already stated in the past. No surprise there.

But he also calls into question by demonstration and data, how many of the so called “legitimate”
lifts are not as beneficial as people thought they were.

I was already on the fence about sticking with my current setup and 285’s when the tires need replacement, but now it seems pretty clear that going back to stock with 265’s is probably smarter.

 

We have a very budget friendly LT kit. Either 3.5" wider or 5" per side. Also currently making a fabricated / machined upright. 2wd or 4wd, 300M axles, Heim steering kit, also billet upper arm mounts are available. Everything is on our website or will be shortly. Also YES the shocks are only for mock up and rolling in out of the shop.

 

This really makes me rethink wanting to raise my TRD Pro a bit… especially knowing that the best two options are the Eibach Springs and Westcott Spacers…. What to do, what to do??

Yep, I went into my purchasing decisions blind. I knew that I was going to buy a 4Runner and when I saw a few trucks with the lift and 285’s, I wanted the same.

I do enjoy the additional ground clearance and the look. But for longevity consideration, I don’t think it’s worth it. I’m a conservative driver on and off road, but the idea of having a premature ball joint failure that could lead to an accident doesn’t sit well with me.

I think the majority of us have been misled by those who market lifts for IFS systems.

 

Yup 2” is best. I tell this to my wife daily

 

I struggled with this too after seeing this video. Buuuuut, then I snapped out of it and realized that it’s just trading one thing for another. Front end height/clearance vs down travel. If you dont have the clearance, you may avoid getting in situations where stock downtravel is beneficial.

And it’s hard to argue that 4runners look so perfect with 2 inches of lift.

Ball joint wear…if you check that your ball joint isnt the thing limiting down travel, you should be good right? Other than that, it’s good to accept that increased vigilance or maintanance is part of the game when you mod.
