Squeaking at low speed

I can hear a squeaking when I am coasting at a low speed. It doesn't matter if I am accelerating or coasting. I think its coming from the back. Anyone know what could be causing this squeak and what I should look at first?

 

Lube your zerk fittings on your drive shafts lately...

Check you e brake cable brackets. They're located by the rear sway bar links on each side of the frame rail. Put a little grease at any contact points to reduce the friction and that might alleviate the squeak.

 

Tried the grease zerks, didn't fix the issue. I notice this squeak around 15-40 mph, as I increase speed the squeaks frequency goes up until I can no longer hear it. I'm beginning to think I might need a wheel bearing to be replaced, it sounds like its coming from the left rear side.

Obviously I hope it isn't a wheel bearing because they cost $100 just for the part. Don't know if this is a job that I can do myself either.

What else should I replace or grease? Could it be a worn bushing?

Edit: and I'll try the brake cable bracket too.

 

Could the rear brake shoes need replacement?
Could the rear drums have been damaged, struck somehow, so one is slightly out of round, and thus rubbing on the shoes in one spot as it goes 'round?
Could the rear shoes need adjustment? Too tight or too loose?
Could the rear brakes, or all of them, need to be bled? Could there be a leak inside the drum? Could the cables for the parking brake need lubrication, adjustment or whatever? Could the bell-cranks need lube or adjustment?

Just tossing ideas out there?

Have you put it up on stands, chock wheels, put in neutral and hand turned rear wheels? Listen and feel as you rotate wheels. Maybe help you narrow it down.. Are you missing a cat? Lol

 

@Trekker Did you ever resolve this? I am having the same problem with a 2015 4Runner. Symptoms are exactly the same as yours: high-pitched squeaking at low speeds, gets more frequent as I increase speed then stops after 35'ish mph.

 

@DudeDnB, @Trekker I also have a 2015 4Runner and experience this front screeching noise, at very slow speeds and only when braking. I had the dealer inspect it and they couldn't replicate the noise, they flushed the brake fluid, noise is still present. They said it is possible grease from overfilling the ball join SPC UCA could have drooped down.. but I may just go and buy some new bosche quiet drive and ceramic pads and call it a day.

From some article in the interwebs "the squealing noise is caused by high-frequency vibration of the brake pads against the rotating disc. Vibration is the unavoidable result of friction generated by the pads as the caliper clamps them against the rotating disc. Mounting the brake pads more tightly in the caliper would only make the noise louder."

 

I've heard of a torn CV axle boot can cause squeaking. I don't think thats happening on mine

 

I have squeaking noise at low speeds on my 2019. It sounds like its coming from the interior though. It also happens when the car is driving over bumps at low speed. Then noise disappears when driving faster. Weird... driving me nuts. After few work calls today, I'm going to have someone else drive it and sit in the back to try and pinpoint where the noise is coming from.

 

Okay... I was able to resolve my issue! It seems like these squeaks are caused by different reasons, and mine was the rear tailgate hinge. A little lithium grease resolved the squeaking noise. Here's how I diagnosed the issue.

1) Put down the back row seats and drove around. Squeaked still persisted, so ruled out loose back seat latch.
2) Drove around the block with the tailgate open. No noise. So, deduced that the noise was coming from the hinge on the tailgate. Applied grease around it, and the noise disappeared!

It made sense that the issue wasn't present at higher speed since the aero probably sealed the tailgate tighter. Attaching photos for reference.

I don't mean to be a nit picker, but your pictures are of a hinge, not a latch. Big difference. Did you mean the tailgate "latch", the device bottom center of the tailgate that holds it closed, or the upper right hinge, which is what you pictured?

Jack up the front end and push/pull the top and bottom of the tire. Any play will most likely be wheel bearing play. You could also spin tires by hand while jacked up and see if you can get it to squeak.

I just had a similar noise when turning to the left and it was the hood lacth hook, just sprayed lithium grease and gone.

 

I have the same issue with 2014 FJ Manual 6. 130K
It only starts chirping/squeaking after it has gone 5 miles or more. Can't hear it at high speeds, (blends in with road noise) but when slowing down 20-5mph you can hear it chirp. It is frequency based on wheel speed, in gear or in neutral. Braking, turning etc. do not effect it. I did grease all 6 drive shaft zerks.
Going to put all 4 wheels up and feel for bearings. It seems to get quite at lower >4mph speeds... I'll also hit the slider yokes with a bit more grease and will get back.
