Was curious if I could find and swap in a 2020 head unit into my 2014 and if it would even work right with the new features in the 2020. Anyone know if this is possible?

From what the dealer told me when I was having issues with CarPlay the answer would be no. It's not a single unit that does everything. There are multiple computers that are part of the system. There are cheaper direct fit options to give you CarPlay / Android Auto. Most people go with the T9.

Just tried this for my 2019 and running into port/cable issues. About 3/4 ports are not compatible. Tried reaching out to a few car audio stores and they said it’s impossible, but I’m not giving up. Keep you posted if I find a work around.

I settled for the halo9, probably the best option and definitely worth the money.

Who cares? This never shows everything anyway.
I bet it would be possible, at least for some of the functions, if you knew the pinouts of the connectors and wired them together directly or built yourself adapter harnesses with opposite gender plugs that you'd be able to find, but it wouldn't be simple. I don't know what the differences between buttons like the steering wheel buttons would be, too, so you might end up losing all functionality on the steering wheel. It could be like a 2019 uses a Sega Genesis controller protocol while the 2020 uses a Super Nintendo controller protocol. Yeah, you could work around it with some engineering, but have fun with that. And if you're snipping plugs off of cables, enjoy.

Here’s a few pics of the ports. In the works with getting a few cords from a parted out 2020. Fingers crossed!

Hi there, did you abandon the project of retrofitting the 2020 head unit to 2019 or did you succeed bc I'm trying to do the same and no one wants to take it on.

There is a listing on ebay where someone is selling a 2020 Headunit with the retrofitted wiring harness for the 2014-2019 models. But they are charging a fortune for it unfortunately! So I'm sure it can be done. From my work on both 2012 and 2017 4Runner Entune headunits it looks like only four connections need to be accounted for:
    • Connection for steering wheel controls, bluetooth, parking brake, reverse, speed sense, etc.
    • Connection for rear camera
    • Connection for speakers
    • Connection for power
On the 2020 HU I see three similar sized white connections which could account for the (1) steering wheels controls (and other stuff I mentioned), (2) rear camera, and (3) speakers. The black connection to the left of those three could be for power. Obviously, I'm guessing here and could totally be off.
I'm basing all of this off of this metra adapter: http://www.metraonline.com/part/71-1765

For the radio, the existing harness should work for all 5th gens.

For the navigation, if the existing harness doesn't work you should be able to use this:
Amazon.com: DHT Electronics External GPS Antenna with SMB Female for Verizon Samsung 3G Network Extender : Electronics

For XM, the XM radio harness might work for the 2014-2019 models.

For the USB, you could use this if the factory harness doesn't work:
    http://www.metraonline.com/part/AXUSB-TY6

I'm super curious to see if this works because if it does I'm going to do it. I've installed the T9 (which died on me) and am now using a 2017 HU that I retrofitted into my 2012 TE which also uses the Beat Sonic T-AV-CB2 unit for CarPlay/Android Auto.

I've already searched all the various forums but it seems no one has attempted the retrofit, at least if they have they didn't document it on anywhere on the net.

Edit: I'm almost positive the 2020 unit will work in 2014-2019 models. For the Tacoma Infotainment.com offers the 2020 Carplay/AA HU with a harness for the older models. The harness looks to be what you would need based on the connections: https://www.infotainment.com/collec...rplay-and-android-auto?variant=31755246796836

The 2020 stereo sounds shitty AF until you add another $2K+ to the system. Why on earth someone would try so hard to install one baffles me.

The T9 didn't sound any better than either of the stock head units I've had. I'm sure the 2020 head unit is probably on par with all of them sound-wise. At this point in my life I have no desire to add additional subs or anything like that lol. I'm a tinkerer and like doing this kind of stuff, but to each their own.

To be honest, I initially looked at doing this with my 2019, but it was more trouble than it was worth, so in June of 2020, I sold the 19 and got a 20. My main reason was screen size.

    Cheers,

I found a 2020 non-JBL nav Entune 3.0 HU from a salvage vehicle for a decent price. So I attempted the retrofit, and surprisingly, it worked... extremely well.

    Details:
I found this thread on a Tacoma forum where a few folks had retrofitted an Entune 3.0 HU into older models: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/new-2020-head-unit-buying.593658/page-18

After some research I determined that all Entune 3.0 HU's share the same connectors, 4Runner included. Obviously the key to it working was getting a harness that would work. Long story short, I contacted the amazing folks at https://autoharnesshouse.com and they were able to create a custom harness that would allow plug-in-play from the Entune 2.0 connectors into Entune 3.0 connectors. The harness set me back $190. This includes a connector that enables the navigation to work on the newer unit. If you don't need nav on the HU, then the harness only costs $135.

Retrofit for items related to the 2012 model year that have different connectors than the 2014-2019 models:
    - GPS: Purchased this:
    - Backup camera:
    - USB: Entune 3.0 HU's use a new connector... Purchased this for $21:
    - XM Radio: My 2012 apparently has a different XM radio antenna than the 2014 and up models, so the adapter that I tried didn't work in either the Entune 3.0 or 2.0 HU's. It might work fine for folks with 2014+ models since the connector is the same as is on the Entune 3.0 HU. Which is fine, I don't use XM radio

The install was pretty easy overall. After starting the HU for the first time, it took like 10 minutes for GPS to reset. It also took about 10-15 minutes for bluetooth to start working. Thankfully, the backup camera works fine using my custom harness too. Android Auto worked immediately when I connected my phone via usb.

All in all, I love the 2020 Entune 3.0 HU. The 8" screen is awesome. After having the T9 and 2017 Entune 2.0 HU, the 2020 HU seems to be the best. The sound quality is on par with the T9. I don't regret going to all of this trouble with how good it turned out. I've also gotta say, the new HU looks so good in my now 10-year-old vehicle.

One final caveat: This only works for non-JBL head units. If you have a JBL sound system, you are unfortunately SOL.

I was very excited to try to do this in my 19 but then I just saw that it doesn't work with JBL. That's a big bummer. Is there that big of a difference that custom harnesses won't work? I'm trying to find some pictures of the back of the 3.0 head unit but am coming up empty.

I have been wanting to do this in our 19. Finally someone has. Where have y'all found the 2020+ radios? Do I need all 3 harnesses from autoharnesshouse?

@TVEye do you recall the HU part number you got for your retrofit?

Just an FYI: AutoHarnessHouse can swap the camera connector for you. If you have the smaller 2012-style connector (16-pin connector), just email them. That will save you the hassle of buying/combining the AXXESS adapters.

Looks like the black speckled bezel/trim head units without JBL have the following part numbers (not sure if they differ by year but these are the ones I found online):
    2021: 86100-35632
    2022: 86100-35634

Can anyone confirm the way to differentiate a JBL from a non-JBL unit is the presence of the JBL logo under the left side of the screen? Also, I assume the AutoHarnessHouse adapter kit works for 2020, 2021, and 2022 head units?

The JBL system has JBL badging, an external amplifier and a factory subwoofer. Non-JBL has none of that.

@TVEye I have a 2011 limited 4runner with a JBL radio system, it doesn't have a screen but I have a backup camera in the rearview camera. I purchased a 2018 entune JBL head unit and tried to install it. Everything fit with wiring harness adapters except one. I'll upload a picture of it, my car has a 20-pin harness and needs to fit into a 10/6 plug but I haven't been able to find any adapters. Do you know if this is a possibility?IMG_8240.HEIC.jpgIMG_8241.HEIC.jpg

Yes you will. The only system Toyota has that I've seen work without is the Supra (BMW) and the new Tundra. I'm really hoping theyll figure out how to do the upgrade with JBLs

I'm assuming you're talking about the backup camera harness? Our pre-facelift 5th gens have a 16pin harness for the backup camera. The facelift models have a 20 pin harness. Is the backup camera still working in the review mirror? If so, then you probably don't have to do anything further... unless you want the backup camera to work in the HU.

What adapter or wire harness is this? My transplant 3.0 entune radio did not come with that.

I used autoharnesshouse.com for the new harness and everything works great except for the maps and compass on my instrument cluster now.

Part number for that harness is 86842-33150. I picked one up for about $60 from a Toyota dealer.
Unfortunately, it seems most second hand radio units don't come with this small harness, especially if you don't specify it. I understand it's easy to just unplug every connector from the back of the radio but just a couple extra seconds to inspect will show a loose harness back there...
