My exhaust is rattling at idle while holding the brake. Can only hear the rattle when the AC compressor engages and a load is put on the engine. This truck only has 1k miles on it. I am definitely bringing it back to the dealer unless anyone has some simple fix advice…

Curious how you narrowed the sound down to the exhaust?

The thing with the dealer is that they’ll just grease the exhaust bearings and send you on your way. Everyone knows those bearings are sealed and dont need greasing ;)

Heat shields are normally high pitched metallic sounds. This is more low pitched. I crawled under there while wife held the brake (safe I know) and sounded exactly like it was coming from where the exhaust bolts together

While I fully support using your warranty, if you've narrowed it down to a single bolt, have you tried tightening it to see if it fixes it?

You could potentially save yourself a drive to the dealer, sitting in the waiting room watching the young and the restless next to Delores as she gets her Avalon oil changed.

Yes, I tried to tighten it. It’s extremely tight.

Hmm, well I guess its a trip to the dealer.

I feel ya on annoying noises. I had the squeaky rattle for years. Found out it was a loose fastener on the engine bay splash shields.

I am dropping it off at my dealer in the morning. Which is fine because I have to drop my 15 Tundra off for an oil change anyways after we pick the 4Runner up. I’ll keep this thread updated.

Waiting for the dealership to hear noises that you hear everyday knowing they probably going to write on their sheet “no problem found” and “could not reproduce” is so frustrating. Fingers crossed for you.

More likely a heat shield or skid plate that wasn’t secured properly.

Update: Advisor texted and said the famous “it’s characteristic of the vehicle” I replied “Definitely not normal I can barely hear myself speak at a drive thru” then sent him the video of the noise. I told him this morning it must be driven and up to operating temp and the noise will appear, sounds like they cold started it and waited.

    They are searching still.

I feel like service advisors are asked during their interview, "Are you able to show absolutely no care or interest in customer vehicles? Are you able to not remember a conversation you had 30 seconds ago? Are you able to deny coverage for no apparent that reason other than your own opinions?" If they answer "hell yes!" they're hired on the spot.

It’s always best to take them for a ride to demonstrate the noise.

He wants me to show the tech the noise, since it’s just so terribly hard to replicate it. This is beyond aggravating. Now I’ll have to be late to work in the morning just to show these people how to do their jobs.

On wife's '20 SR5 it was the heat shield. Took three trips to the dealer to get it fixed.

My skid plate was loose, and only rattled under load. In Park, no issue, put it in drive, and rattle.

Another time, I bent my skid plate into my exhaust, that was deafening when it was in Drive or under load. That was on me, and a few bolts and a 5lb maul solved it.

I’ve narrowed it down to this area. From my banging on the exhaust skills, it’s coming from there.

I put my $$ on heat shield as well. On my wife's 4R I thought it was the exhaust as well. Went after the bolts multiple times to no avail. Going through a drive through was quite noisy.

Which heat shield? I checked everyone of them. None are loose.

Bang on the exhaust with your hand under drivers side behind front tire.

i had the same noise and cut the heat shield off, its held on with what looks like hose clamps if my memory serves me correctly.

Looks like I’ll be making another 30 minute drive to the dealer in the morning. I just left the 4Runner there overnight. I’ll stay posted.

You need to bang on things with a rubber mallet. Hands usually won’t do it.

Dealer didn’t hear my problem either. Going to have to probably take two hours off work to SHOW them myself. Frustrating. Mine was left overnight as well.

Coincidentally I have a 2022 sport and another guys mom has a Trd sport with problems all under 1,000 miles in these forums. Production issues showing up?
