I want to upgrade my factory stereo system to SiriusXM with Bose speakers. Is this possible? And if so, how? I'm trying to keep my 2000 4Runner an original as possible but really want to upgrade my sound system. And to make it even better, I'd like to integrate being compatible with my Android phone to answer calls. That's probably a big ask, but I will never sell my 4runner, ever....so I want to see if I can get more conveniences.

    Nice looking ride!

A good place to start would be someone like Crutchfield. Look them up online, then enter your vehicle specific info, and that'll give you an idea of what will fit your rig. You should be able to find something you like. You might also hit up a local installer and see what they suggest, too. If you can find a place locally you could probably hear what different headunit and speaker combinations sound like, and try out some features to make sure they suit your wants.

Also I'm not sure if the newer headunit talk about SiriusXM still. Everyone talks about newer Apple Carplay, Android auto and newer music services like Spotify, Youtube music, Amazon music etc right? Wonder if anyone still use SiriusXM.

I cheaped out on a boss head unit off Amazon with apple car play and spent more money chasing “good sound” afterwards with other upgrades than I would have spent just buying a nice even mid ranged head unit in the first place.

I ended up getting new JVC speakers, then having to amp them with a small kicker amp....still was a very shallow sound and ended up having to continue with a small powered sub under the driver seat. Bright side is now it sounds fantastic.

I love the apple carplay but the screen/radio on the 3rd gen is quite low. You cant really focus on a map or anything to intently while driving. But if your game is audio off your phone its fantastic.

Audio install is all pretty easy on the 3rd gens and can be a great way to get your hands into doing things yourself there is tons of youtube videos on everything and if you get the right parts it’s literally just connecting colored wires together.
The screen looks pretty good in my opinion. And theres lots of panels to hide and run wires.

Like its been said crutchfield is the best resource. And audio in the states is a fraction of the cost up here in canada so getting descent stuff off the bat is your best option. Dont cheap out like me!

I looked online for a bit because I was curious. SiriusXM is an option on newer headunits, though it might not be built-in. Many of the units I saw provide an input for an external satellite receiver -- the receiver runs around $70-$100 and comes with a satellite antenna. Some headunits have inputs for back-up cameras and USB devices, too. It looks likes features are limited by wallet size.

Yeah, I haven't heard about SiriusXM talk nowadays as most people tend to pay for 1 service they can use across multiple devices.

Sorry for being late to the party..... You don't have to go expensive to get SiriusXM. You can get a basic HU with Bluetooth. SiriusXM has packages that you can stream from your phone, no direct tuner required. I think they have a promo for $5 a month for Select Streaming.

Sorry for the late reply/question. Any update as to how you ended up? I am getting ready to do the same upgrade to my 2002, We live in a rural area and have only Country and Hispanic stations (not that theres anything wrong with that) I had SiriusXM in my other truck (sold now) and loved it. Would like to get a HU that will accept the SiriusXM receiver. Understand thats an added cost, no big deal. TIA

I have an '02 myself and I installed an Alpine iLX-W650 and it is SiriusXM ready. I did not install the tuner. I decided to use the App which CarPlay supports natively. Also there more channels available via the App. Plus they have plans that don't require having a hard wired tuner. It's called the SiriusXM Streaming plan.

Again sorry for the late reply....Yeah, I get that. So does the APP work like the Tuner? We live in a very rural area and the SiriusXM Tuner is great. (I don't know anything else that works)...Cructhfield has it for $399...open box $360.not bad. I really like the very shallow depth.

Oh forgot to ask. Did you look at adding the 4 Channel Amp package? KTA-450?
