Should I buy a 2022 TRD Pro?

So here’s the deal. I currently have. 2020 Tacoma TRD Pro, but with a baby on the way I need more room for the baby seat and surprise, I don’t really use the bed as much as I thought so an SUV will suite us better.

I can get $3k more for my Tacoma (from what I paid last year) and I’m lucky enough to find a 4Runner TRD Pro at sticker and no dealer mark ups!

My concern is that I’d be dropping $54k on an SUV platform designed in 2010 and it’ll be replaced with a complete redesign in a year or two. My biggest gripe with the Tacoma is the lack of power and crappy gas mileage, and I assume I’ll be dealing with the same on the 4Runner also. I love the reliability and resale value but fear that with a new generation coming out soon the 5th gens will take a hit in price.

I’m considering a Bronco or an F-150. If I can continue to live with the power/gas mileage issues am I right to think the resale value will take a hit when the 6th gen comes out?

If you found a Pro with no markup, I wouldn't consider it available unless you have a deposit on it.

Yes, you'll be dealing with the same gripes as the Tacoma.

If you want reliability I'd be weary of the Bronco.

If your truck bed is useless now, it'll be useless in an F-150

You’re not going to find a Bronco.

I thought you were dumping your pickup because it’s not a family vehicle. Why get a 150?

If you trade your vehicles in every couple of years, buy a Ford.

If you keep your vehicles for many years, buy a Toyota.

I put an order in for a last month (with a dealer that has high allocations), they average 4-6 months to order a 2022.

An F-150 has a huge cab, there’s more leg room in the back than most SUVs, but I’m leaning more towards the Bronco.

My biggest concern with the 4Runner is it becoming obsolete when the 6th gen comes out and it loosing resale value especially with gas prices going up and word of the new 4Runners having a turbo or hybrid.

The 5th Gen is based off a platform that came out in 2003.

If you test drive one and you like the features and technology of the 4Runner, don’t worry about anything being obsolete. No use in chasing the latest technology.

If your 4Runner loses value after you buy it, that’s the way it has been historically.

Sounds like you’re leaning towards the Bronco. Go for it and let us know how it goes.

I spent the better part of the last 18 months on Bronco forums. I even have an early reservation that I can't get because of allocation issues with a small dealer. I placed a TRD Pro order in October and should have an allocation within the next week. I see the appeal of the Bronco but I strongly recommend doing your research. Lots of 1st gen issues with QC are cropping up including complete engine failure. If you have a reservation get a signed DORA sales agreement from the dealership. Im seeing daily posts about markups from Ford "stealerships" once the vehicle arrives. TBH with a baby on the way reliability should be your number one focus. Just my two cents.

If you can get the 22 4Runner TRDPro at MSRP and for some reason you don’t like it after a few hundred miles, you can always flip it for more than what you paid.

Most people buy Toyotas because they last forever. So the resale value is just a plus but not the main reason to buy it. The 4R is a proven system that will last you hundreds of thousands of miles if you take care of it. So I wouldn’t worry about the new gen unless you plan on getting rid of it in a couple years.

I have both the Tacoma and 4Runner. The 4Runner has much more room inside the vehicle for car seats. I’m about 6’2” and fit with either my 5 year old or rear facing car seat from my new born. I also fit in the back seats comfortably and they recline which is nice.

I had a 2010 F150. It did have a lot of room but the thing fell part over the years. I would much rather have a Tundra than a F150.

Don’t see the appeal of getting a Bronco if you aren’t going to wheel it. There is much more space in cabin and cargo area in the 4R. Plus they’re really hard to get.

    Thats just my $0.02.

I know I’m on a 4Runner forum, but I would stick with the Tacoma. One kid?? Absolutely doable. My daughter and I used the Tacoma 4 years with no issues….now I’m remarried…. I have 4 kids. I swapped to the 4Runner because I carry a lot of gear.

headlights are better on the Tacoma (LED’s)

    gas mileage was better.

    i could hit 65 MPH

    Paint was better

The 4Runner works for my lifestyle, but if I could do it again, I would have kept the Tacoma and figured out how to make it work. Maybe time will help?? I had the Tacoma 4 years and I’m 4 months into the 4Runner.

(no, I am not planning on getting rid of the 4Runner anytime soon)

not sure where you are located but here in San Diego, broncos are a minimum of a $15k mark up

The gas mileage will probably be the same or a little worse than the Taco.

I believe the 4Runner has a bit more low end torque than a Tacoma, but they certainly aren't race cars. Still, if you floor it, it will pass and merge just fine.

You could always try to test drive one. Every 4runner from 2010+ has the same engine, transmission, and gearing, so any one you drive will give you a good idea what the PRO will be like.

The 4Runner has no problem hitting 100 MPH. Just ask the friendly Georgia state trooper I met last year. :anonymous:

I'm more and more regretting having 2021 4Runner TRD Pro. Just realized that it has far worse mpg than my other 4Runners even compared to lifted 4R with 285s. What is the reason? I have no clue. Planning to check my alignment soon even though I don't feel anything wrong with it. When I purchase new it had a bad alignment.

Yes sir, its new and now at 4000 miles. Did the first oil change around 1500miles. I did alignment when it had very low miles and tire balance also done.

I wouldn't buy the first year of a remodel. Personally I like the current Runner and I'm not worried about the 6th gen. You'll catch me trading in for a new Tundra first. I may eat my words but it's looking like a 4 popper turdo and maybe some sort of electric assist will be the new drivetrain. I'm not really a fan of turbo 4 bangers because they are weak off boost.

the sole reason for me getting a '22 was the fact that it is an aging platform, with the majority of kinks worked out. old tech is good tech to me. still has enough fancy stuff to keep me occupied (apple carplay, tss, heated seats, etc.)

unless this 6th gen gets north of 300hp and 25mpg combined, i see no real reason to jump ship from my current one. the design is good and powertrain is proven at this point.

i personally don't think the new gen will tank the 5th gen's resale value. people who want 4runners used are a niche market. and that niche market of buyers wants a vehicle that is proven and has strong aftermarket support, which the 4runner has.

though a pro at msrp is good in this market, evaluate to see if you really want the suspension, wheels and exhaust at almost a $7k premium over a comparably equipped ORP.

the pro has amazing resale value, but other 4wd 4runner trims still command a good amount of money.

I had very good luck with my F150. 22mpg, I got 210K miles with zero issues before I traded it for my 4Runner. TONS of room. I had a bed cover and bedrug so I could haul stuff that I didn't want scratched or wet (music equipment and sensitive gear for work). Worked great, rear seat area was MASSIVE. However, I think I was very lucky, in that a small V6 with two turbos made it that far without issues.

I am (so far) liking my 4Runner, though. Gas mileage is much worse (18mpg), and no where near the room of the F150. I also miss the power it had compared with the 4Runner. But it's much easier to park, has a tighter turn radius, and, I suspect, will be better off road than the F150 was. I DO miss the 36 gallon fuel tank (800 mile range!!), but it's nice not having to re-set fuel pumps every fill up when I hit the max allowed purchase!

One thing to think about on a TRD Pro at MSRP... so many folks are accepting and paying the mark up on Pros, and down the road, when it comes time to sell, you'll be further away from being under water on it than average. I know when I saw a MSRP Pro, I jumped on it. Imagine having an extra $5-15K invested in a vehicle that will not have that considered in the resale?

Trust me the 6th gen will not make the 5th gen resell go down...if anything it will make it go up. Look at the 2nd gen tacomas, they went up once people realized the 2nd gen 4.0 was so much better than the crap 3.5 in the Tacoma.

Pro at MSRP = investment in today’s market.
We made an access cab taco work with 2 kids in car seats for many years, then replaced that with the double cab.
The 4Runner is slow, old tech and what 4Runner folks want.

I am just in awe of how many people there are on here who can somehow get multiple HIGHLY desirable vehicles at only MSRP from multiple dealerships.

I've been looking for a Pro at MSRP since July. Then a couple weeks ago, I found one and had leads on 2 others. I think they're getting easier to find.

True. But now I think I should have fight for a TRD ORP + a reasonable check to my hand for the mods.

With this mpg I have no clue what would happen if I do a lift and put bigger tires? That would any way cost me a roof rack as the original one with lift won't fit in my garage. And few other little points that I was nagging on the Pro..:frustrated:

Anyways will see what I can do and def will share what I find investigating what happens or see if it improves with more miles as suaveflooder mentioned.
