I just received my wife’s 22 TRD off road on Monday. She is very excited. It also got ceramic coated. Lift ordered and waiting for back order parts. Now working on wheels and tires.
I called and talked to a few shops today for quotes. So one of them caught me off guard maybe some of you can clarify if this is correct. One shop said they can’t mount and balance because they need to remove the original wheel sensors from the factory wheel. Tires and wheels need to be shipped to me. They mentioned that only one set of sensors can be programmed to the 4Runner at a time. I told them that I wanted to still keep my stock set up for backup. They also said that after market wheel sensors are junk. Is this true?

    thanks

There are 2 types of sensors - one for steel wheels and one for aluminum. Your TRD came with aluminum sensors. 99 percent of aftermarket wheels are aluminum. If they are trying to sell you more sensors on a new vehicle, they are screwing you. The sales pitch of the aftermarket sensors are junk, are, IMO, nonsense.

We swapped wheels and tires using the sensors from the original OR wheels(Toyota) it works.

You can keep you stock set up, but you need to get sensors for the in use set up, and then have your vehicle programmed to recognize them. And I believe reprogrammed if you go back to your back up set up. I can speak on the quality of aftermarket ones, but will say I read about a lot of folks using them on the Tacoma forum, the only issue I ever heard about was some struggled to get the TPMS system to recognize the aftermarket ones, so that would be my focus if I was thinking about this path.

when i had my infiniti QX70 i had TPMS sensors in both sets of rims. when i swapped out the summers/snows the vehicle had to be reprogrammed each time to read the set currently on the vehicle.

Aftermarket sensors can be crap. Had some on my transit van that would randomly mess up after so many miles and have to be reprogrammed. I’d fork out the extra money for oem and not have to run into any issues.

I’m not an expert on this, but I was like to believe that the new fifth generations have five channel sensors and you can reprogram your truck to recognize whatever tires are mounted on the vehicle yourself through the dash user settings, like with most modern cars.

I will say that aftermarket TPMS sensors are absolute crap. You have no guarantee of durability, connectivity, or battery life. You may get a good batch, you may get a bad batch.

TPMS is the automotive equivalent of gasoline can safety nozzles. A complete clusterfuck.

The amount of time and attention paid to making them work correctly and avoiding nag alarms in the car FAR EXCEEDS the effort it would take just to check the fucking pressure periodically.

I like how the most modern systems will tell you what pressure each tire has in real time.

When they are working, that is extremely useful.

Does anyone who lifts these trucks out of the box actually need it?

"Need" is a pretty high standard. I know I don't want everything I spend my time and money on to be based only on what I need...

I'm sure we've covered this before but what is 'ceramic coated' mean?
