Ordered a new set of tires; Goodyear Wrangler Ultra Terrain AT.

I am currently running a set of Cooper Evolution MTs in 285/70/17s in LT that are siped. Awesome off-road and decent in the snow. But, they are a bit noisy and really killed my gas mileage. We had our first couple of inches of snow for the year and was reminded how squirrely they are.

I watched hours of reviews of different AT tires and originally was going to get the Falken Wildpeaks in a P-rating.

But, ended up ordering the Goodyear Ultra Terrains from Discount Tire Online for $247 each. But, I also got a military discount and a $60 discount for using my Discount Tire CC.

So, under $900 for a set of tires shipped to my door. Plus, I can probably get $400 to $500 for my Coopers, which still have around 70% tread left after 15k miles.

Really excited to see how good these tires are in the snow. The reviews are very promising and they have the mountain snowflake designation.

 

I think someone had a thread about these a year or 2 back. They look nice!

Yeah, after the Authority Tires, I was ready to swear off Goodyear for good. But, these supposedly have a much better tread compound that stays soft in cold weather, unlike my last set of Goodyears, which turned into hockey pucks on ice and packed snow. Looking forward to doing a full video review in the Idaho mountains.

 

I saw a set of those tires on a F150 today. Looked good!

 

Tires were supposed to be here on the 15th. Now stalled in Portland, OR at the infamous Troutdale distribution center and are now stamped "delayed". Freaking FedEx. Getting a foot of snow the next day or so and was really wanting the new tires on.

I'm driving to Seattle next week to spend Christmas with my grandkids and often times the pass is closed unless you either have chains or 3-peak rated tires.

Was really relying on these tires being delivered before I left so I could do a proper review and have confidence in getting over the pass.

Whatever. I'll still be fine. The Coopers aren't "bad" in the snow and are better than a lot of AT tires. Just wanted to try these Goodyears out on a road trip in the winter.

 

Tires finally got here!



LT285/70R17 Goodyear Ultra Terrain ATs. These were supposed to be delivered over a week ago and the plan was to go to a nasty farm road and do a video showing some before and after tests for braking and acceleration. But, I have to leave first thing in the morning for Seattle and the tires didn't arrive until after 3pm today.

Tire shop said if I was there within a half hour, they could get me done before closing tonight.

So, no time to do anything but throw them in the back and head to town. It was dark by the time they were installed, so didn't even get any pics of them installed.

Initial impressions?

These tires are amazing! Super smooth and quiet with a nice ride. Backed up to my shop to unload the old tires and backed up in a foot of fresh snow, on an incline, in 2wd, with no slipping. Then pulled up the hill to the front of my house and drove in the berm the snowplow left, in 2wd, with A-Trac off, and they clawed their way up the steep incline. These things are amazing in the snow!

Tire shop guys were gushing over them and said they had never seen them before and they looked awesome.

I reset my MPG and got 16 mpg with the old tires on the way to town, and on the way back, reset it with the Goodyears and got 20 mpg.

Doing over 300 miles tomorrow so will get a more complete impression of how they do.

The cool thing about my trip from the East side of Washington to the West side is that I will drive in every conceivable climate in 5 hours. I will start here in rural farmland on rough 2-lane blacktop, then go into high desert with sand running possible, Then open smooth interstate with 75 mph speed limits, then up into the mountains with deep snow, and finally down into Seattle in rain and traffic gridlock.

Finding a tire that can handle all of that well is a challenge.

Made it to Seattle. The pass was bad and the tires performed well. Did a little playing in some sand and they did well.

How have these tires been holding up? I am sure you have out many more miles on them in many different conditions. I hope they have performed well! How has your gas mileage changed?

 

I have just over 1000 miles on them and am extremely impressed!

I took a farm road the other day to let my dog out to do some bird chasing and the warm weather turned it into a greasy mess with lots of mud and some 2' deep snow drifts in other spots.

The tires did awesome! They threw some nice big clumps of mud on the roof and all over the side of the vehicle while getting me anywhere I needed to go.

Not even close to getting stuck. I was happy with how they were cleaning out and throwing mud everywhere.

I'm going on a 3000-mile road trip from Idaho to Mexico in 3 weeks and will take video of the tires performing in everything from snow, to mud, to deep sand, and rocks in the desert.

Will do another video review of how the tires held up and how much they have worn after about 4500 miles on them.

 

Please don't. I don't want to regret my decision of buying old Duratracs when shop told me UltraTerrain is the new version..
