I just got a 2000 4runner and it came with 2 keys. One if them is for the ignition which I assume was replaced, and the other for the doors. The problem I am having is the key for the door only works to unlock from the driver side door and lock from the passenger side door. I cant lock the car from the driver side and I cant unlock from the passenger side. Is this normal?

    You mean the Valet key?

Is it all metal and no rubber?

Valet key won't work the glove box.

Still doesn't sound quite right either way.

There is 1 all metal key and 1 key with rubber

Metal key can only be used in ignition

Rubber key can be used only to unlock car from driver door and unlock car from passenger door. It also works with the glovebox

Also it can only roll up the rear window and not put it down. Im thinking that they key is worn weirdly as there is only 1 side of the key that can open the glovebox

Hey Simon I seem to be having a similar problem of sorts. I believe the issue might be security related. Did you have any issues with your security when you purchased the vehicle? Also try spraying some lube into the keyholes to make sure there isn’t build up. I just sprayed some in mine and it didn’t work but maybe you might have better luck

I did not have any problems with security and I tried spraying some lube into the key holes. I might pull out the key lock cylinders and see if something is wrong with them.

I have a VERY similar issue. Used 2001 limited. Came with a metal key and a key with plastic on it. I tried graphite lubricant in all cylinders first as well.

The key with plastic works the ignition, and can be finicky. The metal key unlocks the drivers door, but only with the correct edge facing up. It also locks the drivers door with the same edge facing up. It will work the back window if I wiggle it and really work at it.

I took it to the only brick and mortar locksmith in town who tried to put the same "good" edge on both sides of a new key. Tried 3 times and I ended up with more metal keys that work the same as the first one did.

I bought a remotes start/keyless entry to put on it.
