the plastic rear deck section on top of the bumper under the tailgate is super slippery for my dogs jumping in and out.... i have tried grip tape but was not happy with the appearance or results. i'm thinking some kind of rubberized paint.... almost like Rhino lining. I just ordered a couple cans of Plasti Dip but before I go that route does anyone have any better ideas? thanks!

I tried that. Wasn't pleased with the results. I just peeled it all off.

I would look for boat products, like anti slip mats, sea deck pads, etc. Amazon is loaded with 'em. Cut to size, adhesive backed....

Ever try Mcmaster-Carr? All kinds of materials and hardware. One of my favorite sites. I did a search on adhesive-backed foam tape, and here's one result. I thought maybe a dense foam might fit your need. But they have tons of stuff that could give you ideas. The copy/paste might not be great, but you'll get the idea.

Ultra-Weather-Resistant EPDM Foam Sheets and Strips
Made of EPDM foam, these sheets and strips have the best resistance to water, sunlight, and oxidation of all the foam we offer.

Closed-cell foam restricts water, air, and gases from being absorbed.

the dogs are heinz 57 pitbull rescue mutts. the skateboard grip tape looked like crap and it's really not effective with dog paws and nails. i'm going to spray on the Plasti Dip.....if it doesn't work i'll just take if off with a heat gun and explore other options. I appreciate all the suggestions. FYI, I did buy this receiver mounted step which is great and I highly recommend but the dogs still struggle with the slippery bumper on their second step up: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000WQ823E?ie=UTF8

This stuff is made for boats, but based on what I've seen with our pit bull on it in a boat, your dogs should be very happy with it. You can either cut it to fit yourself or have them cut it for you.

I have the canvasback liner with the pull down bumper cover. My lab does fine hopping in

I’m not a dog owner, but sometimes I think like a dog. I think the canvasback is a good idea.

that looks like a really good solution.....question.... is it non slip? when the dogs hop up there do they have traction? thank you!

It’s semi non slip. Depending on what is on it it can be really slick, or not. My dog seems to do fine, my moms dog slid around so we have to take a different car when we bring her dog. We use my dogs crate we can tie down for longer trips either way.

I bet a nice thick piece of unlined/untreated canvas has good paw traction. Maybe just getting a big square of that you can fold out over the bumper.

What about this liner with snap in roll out from Weather Tec. I have one not for dogs but protect bumper. Works great.

You could also put double back tape or Velcro strips on this flip out higher up for more traction for them. Plus saves scratching your bumper.

the reason this is such an issue for me is that one of the dogs has really bad hip issues so it's critical she gets good traction on her rear legs. i worry about her hurting herself. thanks for all the ideas. i'll be checking them all out today.

I am not being a wise guy here. I don’t know how often you take your dogs with you, your strength vs. weight of your dogs. But the old fashion way of picking them up would solve the scratch issue, dog slipping issue, and you would get a workout.
    :benchpress:

I should add that my wife and I were talking about getting a boerboel dog and if we did then it would be a completely different story as those dogs weigh 200+ pounds.

Yep that would not be easy for her. Well I hope you find what you are looking for and looking forward to seeing what worked so that when we get a dog I can be ready for this modification.

Hey bud how about a ramp like this with traction. There are a lot of versions of this at chewy.com.

I get it I used to move my dog. Any good man loves his dog.

They also have some trailer hitch inserts steps for dogs as well

i second the ramp. Would completely eliminate impact on the hips and body!

Great idea as you know that ramp won’t slip off the hitch. Very nice
