Hi, just recently joined this online forum. I am looking at a 2020 4Runner Limited. Wondered if the suspension system was problematic. Have a 2016 4Runner and recently asked about replacement of struts. Anyone aware of leaking struts occurring in the 2020 suspension system of 4Runners. I’m not knowledgeable about cars. Like the 4Runner. I am native Oklahoman.

Welcome from Wisconsin! You're in the right place to learn, lots of knowledge on the board, try the 'search' in the upper right corner for something you're having trouble with or question. As far as the leaky strut..... I've never had one leak, shocks yes... just replaced it.

I mean, every part is prone to failure at some point. The limited edition is more of a luxury comfort suspension that was meant for everyday, city type driving.

IMHO anything that has fluid (KDSS and XREAS) will eventually need servicing sooner or later. I've seen (read) some members mentioning that dealers are quoting them in the thousands to replace said suspension components. I prefer simplicity where I can do the service myself in my garage. I have a 4th and 5th gen 4runner. The 4th gen has over 200k miles and the XREAS system is completely shot. Had I wanted to replace that it would've been a dealer item only and cost me in the thousands for a 17 year old truck. Not worth it.

    And BTW.. Welcome from SoCal!!!

I bought a new '20 and can say not one single thing has been an issue. It's got lower miles than expected due to limited covid travel.

Thanks for the welcome Toy 4x4, and the comments slixx1320 and 08TXRunner. I did trade up and got the 20 4Runner. It has 19K miles. I got a good trade in value for the 2016. So, I am hoping it will be good trade. I primarily do city type, everyday driving. However, Oklahoma roads are rated some of the worst in the nation. And there is always (it seems) road construction/repair/reconstruction going on. We have a gravel driveway but roads into our housing area are good.

^^ Right on! Truck barely has 19k miles so you have a long way before the suspensions starts to give. Drive it, enjoy it and worry about it when the time comes.

You might run into issues with your suspension system down the road.

Your Limited has a special suspension system called XREAS that no other 4Runner has. They have been known to leak and fail and they are very expensive to repair.

The good news is you don't have to repair the XREAS system if it does fail. You can just rip it out, put normal (and much less expensive) replacement shocks on, and continue like nothing happened.

And when you do replace the xreas system and swap them out for normal 4runner shocks/struts, keep in mind that you can pick up a full set of barely used shocks/struts from all the folks putting on lift kits. Like me.

I tried to sell my lightly used struts/shocks/springs for 140 bucks, with no takers. They are rotting outside now, waiting for me to just toss them.

Normal 4runner suspension will feel different than the xreas setup in cornering, but people should not get in the habit of throwing an SUV like this around corners anyway. Normal shocks are as plush and comfortable as Ive ever had in a car. Cloud-like comfort!

    And welcome to the forums!

I've seen a few people give them for free and than again, seen some post them for sale for $1500 .

Off topic but, I have a buddy who is in the market for a suspension overhaul. No off roading, just want to replace his old, 200k mile xreas suspensions. Where are you from and how rotted are they?

They’ve been sitting outside in the weather for a couple of months, so honestly would hate for someone to go through the trouble of installing it and have it blow a shock a month later due to corroded shafts.
