Catalytic converter theft is an absolute epidemic here in AZ. Toyota's are a big target, but they are stealing them from almost every make and model. It is really, really bad. Schools and churches are popular targets because they have high-clearance buses in yards with no one around. A big problem is that the scrap yards that are buying them are not reporting the purchases - which they are supposed to be doing. Phoenix PD (where most of these yards are) isn't doing an effing thing to keep them in check, so it is fueling the epidemic.

    My website is www.TalonsGarage.com

I am currently out of 1/8” steel, but have 1/4” aluminum in stock.

those are 300, plus 70 for shipping. I think I could get them out Tuesday.

I recently passed a Prius on a city street that had its cat stolen. Holy hell was it loud!
I was reading that this kind of theft is very low on most PDs priority list. Gone in 60 seconds, rarely caught in the act. When thieves do get caught, or someone fencing cats, they don’t remain in jail long. Too much crowding as it is.

But it makes you wonder why it can’t be controlled at the metal recyclers level.

From what i have read, the recycling companies are driving it. While "authorities " turn a blind eye. The whole globalism + supply chain "disruption" x canceling the nations mining trades = no resources.

I just saw an article on this in Dallas. Seems to be on the rise. The state is going to change the law from a Class A to a Felony. And require thumb prints of sellers, VIN number from vehicle and a few other things and max out payouts to $25. If the scrap yard fails to document the purchase and record a info it is also a felony for them.

Unfortunately, it will likely be unenforced or rarely prosecuted. But it may do enough to keep honest businesses from partaking... We'll see.

Sorry but no such thing as a decent aftermarket. Trust me as an experienced emission repair tech if your state requires annual testing and you do get your cat converter stolen don't buy aftermarket cat converters. You get what you pay for. They don't last and never work as well as the factory units. Aftermarket cat converters contain far less of the rare metals needed to clean emissions and scrap metal dealers pay far less for them. Have seen many aftermarket cat converters fail an emission test right out of the box for various reasons. Yah it's way more money to buy OEM but worth it over the long run especially when most of us like to keep our runners for a long time.

I installed an RCI tranny plate in addition to the engine skid plate to help prevent this. The plate is rectangular and does not cover the CAT unit completely, but I don't think they can get to it or remove it without cutting the tranny plate first. This is for when I'm out in the hiking trail/fishing/etc...I park inside my garage at night always.

My company has several large transport buses and their CAT was stolen about 4 times in the last several months.

Work got hit Several weeks ago. Three pickups. $3000 for replacements on a 2007 f150. Muffler shop has put out 30 estimated for replacing stolen cats on Monday. Was a busy weekend for the crooks.

A friend of mine, had his cat stolen off his Honda Pilot. He said that insurance would pay but only for a cheaper aftermarket cat.

So he took what insurance money they gave him, bought a OEM cat and installed it himself.

From what I’ve read online, aftermarket cats are not as good as OEM and in some cases may not pass emissions.

Unfortunately I live in a state that has emission standards and testing requirements.Didn’t use to but with the population explosion, we do now.

except that "The URD Competition Y Pipe was designed for off road use and competition events. The rear catalytic converters are eliminated. The URD off road Y Pipe is not for on road use and is absolutely not emissions legal anywhere on public roads." outside of that, it's a good option.

Just called them again and I don't have a comprehensive deductible. I don't care what they do to my truck at this point.

they will always pass……the first time. Lol, but you are correct. They do not last. I replaced mine every time I had to smog my mustang with aftermarket cats. Put new ones on, go smog, wait two years, repeat. It was annoying. Factory are hands down a better investment

The cats are thrown into shipping containers headed straight to China and bypassing local recyclers. So that law will do nothing.

We get a lot of Cat thefts here in San Diego but I don't hear too much about 4runners being hit. I do park in the garage and make my wife park her car in the driveway though.....

I would think it would be an easy target because any truck or SUV is much easier to get under than a passenger car.

I read where the vehicles with the most cats are Prius and Tundras. Presumably because of the ease of access and quantity of material inside. And new Tundras have 4 separate cats.

Another thing victims report is that although they pay a small amount of insurance deductible it can take many weeks to get a replacement. And their insurance only covered one month of car rental. A royal pain.

The problem here is the unscrupulous scrap metal dealer that turns a blind eye to the low lifes that cash in on multiple freshly sawn off OEM cat converters. As if they didn't know right. Time to introduce new regulations in states that don't have them and to actually enforce them in states that do. Same problem here in Canada most scrap dealers require photo I.D. when pawning off cat converters but there's always a few bad apples that ruin it for the rest and perpetuate the problem.
