    Hi everyone,

I'm from Reunion Island (next to Madagascar in Indian ocean) and there are not so many 4 Runner arround. Mine is a 1992 2.4 TD. My alternator has just been rebuilt but still it doesn't charge properly my battery. I think it could be due to a voltage regulator problem but i can't find its location in the car. I can't see it in the vehicule's diagrams.

    Thank's for your help.

    Regards
    Laurent

By 1992, most alternators had internal regulators. I am not sure on this particular vehicle, but I would imagine that's the case. It may be that they did not replace the internal voltage regulator in the alternator when they rebuilt it.

This is a typical modern alternator:

If you think you are connected up to the alternator properly, I would:

...look for the 'S' (Sense) terminal and verify it is connected to the battery (getting 12v).
...look for the 'IG' (IGnition) terminal and verify it is getting 12v with the key ON.

L is not needed and B (Battery) is straight to the battery.

If that looks good and it's not working, take the alternator back and have it load tested. In the US, most any car parts shop can load test an alternator in the shop. If you had it rebuilt locally, have them test it.

    Hi Negusm,

Thank you for your quick response. According to my mechanic, my regulator is an external one. But he can't find its location. Do you know where it's supposed to be?

    Thanks for your help!

He should just follow the wires from the back of the alternator to the regulator.

Again, I hope a 2nd gen owner can speak up, but on older cars with an external regulator, it's usually in the engine bay, bolted to the inner fender (so it is grounded) and there are 2 wires that run to the back of the alternator. Not hard to find at all.

I'm pretty sure if you have the right wiring diagram for this car...and there is no regulator shown, just the alternator, it's an internal regulator. You may need a new mechanic.

The voltage regulator is internal with the 2nd gen alternator with the 3.0 and 2.4 gas engines, I am not sure how the 2.4 TD is equipped.

Post a picture of your alternator, front and back. Maybe someone here can ID it.

I'm guessing either you have the wrong alternator (your rebuilder returned you the wrong one) or your mechanic has no idea what they are talking about.
