Good deal?

So long story long, I currently have a 2018 Silverado base 4x4, I needed a work truck but I like to do a lot of off-roading and camping and If I hadn’t needed the work truck I would have definitely gotten a Tacoma or 4Runner. I recently got a new job that no longer requires me to haul tools and materials so I can now finally get a Toyota. My actual question now with that background out of the way, is, with the current market I was able to find a 2018 trd off road 4Runner for a little more then the value trade in value of my Silverado, only thing is this one has 91k miles my Silverado has 39,000. I know reliability wise 4runners are solid but realistically which of these vehicles with proper maintenance will last longer? My Silverado has the 4.6 and manual 4x4 btw I got it at 18k and it has been maintained at all proper intervals by me. Thanks for any information all

 

This a completely bias response… get rid of the Chevy. You already have 39k miles… the Chevy doesn’t have much longer. Seize the opportunity!

 

I have a co-worker that had a 01 Sierra with the 5.3, he finally got rid of it two years ago with 300K miles. The truck looked like it was dropped off a building, but other than routine maintenance he never had any major issues with it. Still had the original transmission to when he got rid of it. He replaced it with a 2019 Z71 High Country, I've ridden in it and it's an amazing truck.

What would worry me about the newer GM's though is the displacement on demand motors. I've seen a lot of people commenting that they've had trouble with theirs, lifter issues seems like a pretty common issue.

The statement that at 39K miles the Chevys lifespan is almost over is ridiculous, however the 4Runner is so old school that it's not going to have the technical issues that you may get on the more advanced Chevy. I really wouldn't think twice about buying a 4Runner with 90k on it. How many miles do you drive a year? I bought my 4Runner with just under 80k on it, knowing that I was going to put 25,000 miles on it a year, and the plan was to keep it 10 years.

I'm just about to hit 130k, and other than the AC needing a recharge, I've had zero issues with it in the 50,000 miles I put on it.

 

Haha don’t get me wrong I definitely am making the switch. I’m just wondering more if this particular deal is worth it, or if it would be better to wait for a lower mileage 4Runner

 

If you can swing the cost, it certainly wouldn't hurt to wait for lower mileage one. I had a certain budget, and when I found my 2013 with the 79k on it, it was at a really good price compared to others that were around. It's also a trail Edition, which is somewhat rare in the early 5th gens, so I jumped on it. Plus I knew I'd be putting miles on it rather quickly, so I didn't want to pay too much of a premium for a low mileage one.

 

I understand the mileage concern. Regardless of Toyota history, I’m not fond on buying expensive used vehicles with almost 100k miles.

thanks for the reply. I’m not trying to get out of my Silverado because I think it’s gonna kick the bucket. I’m just wondering if the 91k 4Runner has as much life left as my Silverado does at 39k. I appreciate the insight a lot because if it’s got as much life left, then for me it’s a no brainer. Im going to switch to a Toyota at this point because I finally can and it fits my needs better. I’m just trying to figure out the best deal, if it’s worth it, or if I should look for a lower mileage version that isn’t a trd off-road maybe? I do like the locking rear diff and the manual 4x4 lever on the off road, but I’m also looking at other 4x4 4runners some manual tacos and some low mileage fj cruisers. It’s a tough choice, but I definitely plan on keeping whichever for at least 10 years

 

Yes if that’s the case I have no problem waiting. I know they are crazy priced these days, but I plan on keeping this vehicle for a long time so I don’t want the high milage used one if it’s not gonna be reliable.

 

The 4R will hold its' value better. However, my '96 Silverado is going strong at 272,000 miles. It has been reduced to a wood hauler.

If the 4Runner was properly maintained then yes it will have a long lifespan. (I sold my 2000 4R at 249K, never any problems). But 91K miles in 4 years sounds like a lot.
I have a 2018 ORP bought in Nov 2017, so almost exactly 4 years ago, and I have 63K on it. I drive about 18K per year but 2020 was a low mileage year due to curtailed pandemic travel. But that 4Runner must have had no time off.
What do you know of its history and are you comfortable with it?
Is the price right for the mileage and condition?

 

It’s not too old, but I would still inspect carefully for frame rust. Know what you are buying.

 

not really that many miles. Average is 15k or so a year, and this one is averaging 22 plus a year. We put over 10k miles in less than 3 weeks in June of 2020 traveling across country.

 

What's the Carfax on the 4Runner show for where it lived? I would avoid salt (snow and ocean) states on any used car.
You might see if Carvana / Vroom can make you an offer on your Silverado. Personally I'd rather have a little lower miles - 50k ish.

 

No I wouldn’t. If adding little more money and getting a new 4Runner is an option, I would go for that.
91k although on a 4Runner is a little high and I wouldn’t do it.
