I am taking a week to visit wife’s family (TX->NC). We were told our new TRD pro will be here end of next week. Is it a bad idea to take the 4Runner on this trip? I think I saw something online about avoiding constant speeds for the first 1k miles. Trying to decide if I should just go ahead and rent a car instead.

I wouldn’t let that discourage you. You can still vary speeds on a road trip without it being a hassle.

would it be okay to drive 2k plus miles before the first oil change and mostly highway? Now when it says no constant speed that can be just me changing 5mph up/down?

Me personally don't feel comfortable driving new car interstate trip. At best I would wait for 500-600 easy miles before hitting constant 75-80mph trip.

i don't understand the early oil change mindset. modern oils are far beyond what they used to be. 5,000 miles minimum before a change.

just don't redline/drive hard when it hasn't warmed up yet.

Your engine will be fine....after a long trip your back will be hurting more!:D
The 4 runner seats are not padded eneough for long trips.

If you’re not doing something REQUIRES the 4Runner’s capabilities, take a rental. Get something fuel efficient and it’ll legitimately pay for it self in fuel savings on a round trip that long. Save the wear and tear and the mileage.

Mine had 600 miles when I bought it new. No idea what happened during that time. It’s still fine 8 years and 117000 miles later.

Many states have no mileage limit for “new.” Warranty starts at 600, not zero.

I know dirtbikes are different than cars, but on a brand new dirtbike you have to change the oil after 1st ride and best if you do 2nd too. You can see all the metal shavings come out and attached to the magnets. The pistons have to wear in or whatever. That was my theory on why it may be good to have first oil change early on. Nothing to do with oil life.

The GR engine will NEVER see the RPMs and pressures a dirtbike engine will, so that’s one consideration.

Also keep in mind that vehicle enthusiast forums are full of people who love to change the oil every 500 miles and then send it off to Blackstone so they can sperg out out over the analysis findings.

The thought of a X-country solo road trip in my T4R is so alluring.

Then again since I live in a liberal overpriced s***hole called the Bay Area where gas prices are insane, I'm sweating going to see my friends and family in Sac / Placer County tomorrow.

Guaranteed to spend $150 at least in gas for a "local" trip.

yeah, i think in Maine dealer demos/loaners qualify as new car sales. even if a year or two old. probably implies the vehicle has never been titled.

The local speedway is the cheapest gas right now, it’s like 4.70 a gallon.

I'm in the 'just do it" camp. these things are tough. mine was a rental vehicle for the first year of it's life....God only knows how it was treated and after 2+ years that I've had it, still drives beautifully. Besides around here at least, it's impossible to drive at a very steady speed for long. I try to run 75 or so but constantly having to slow down/speed up to get around other vehicles and/or avoid getting plowed. The only damage I have on road trips is my back and rear end from the seats and of course the horror of watching the gas needle dive towards "E"

I'll be flying to Tennessee to pick my TRD PRO (mid-Dec) and will drive back to Colorado (roughly 100 miles). I expect that even driving highway, that my speed will be varied - slow downs near on/off ramps, gas stops, bathroom breaks, so no worries (except for rocks):itllbuffout:. My wife an I will thoroughly enjoy the road trip;)
As has been said before new oil technology, basically bulletproof vehicle - enjoy it!:woot:

give me a break, fat fingers 1100 miles - I seem to be dropping keystrokes lately....

This is the best advice I would give too. Bottom line is these T4Rs are awesome vehicles with damn near bullet-proof engines.

For peace of mind, follow the instructions at the above link and rest assure that when you get home that your new baby will not only be fine, but well and properly broken in when you get there!!

If your worried about a 'constant' speed, don't turn on the cruise control! Varying the speed kind of comes naturally, you'll be fine, take a few breaks along the way, not just for gas, take some legitimate breaks for the 4Runner and to stretch, you'll be fine!

Going up and down hills varies the speed and RPMs in these 4Runners - even with cruise control on.

I'm in the "just drive it" camp since I picked up my 2019 from a dealer 1000 miles away and drove it home.
After somewhere between 2000 and 3000 total miles I felt the vehicle drive differently and start getting much better gas mileage. To me that's when I felt that my 4Runner was broken in.

The article referenced in this thread about How to break in a New Car seems awfully specific about 186 and 621 miles. That seems suspicious to me.

It'll be fine, we did that when I got my 4runner last summer.
Do check your tire pressures, my dealership had them at 50psi!
