Instant Gratification Performance Mods

Currently deciding on the right throttle response controller for me and got to thinking, how many other potential quick performance mods could there be.

So many videos on YouTube feel Clickbait-ey, even though technically they’re “modifications”. Lots of “top five”, “top 10 mods”, and majority on lists things like cup holder liners and tint.
I feel like the term mod is thrown around so loosely Or am I being overly critical about it? Let me know what you think…
So, hold on “mods” for aesthetic and superficial changes like int. light swaps to LED or plasti dip emblems.

I’m talking performance mods like strap this sucker up and get that adrenaline flowing. Throttle response controller probably could be considered “superficial“ since its not boosting existing vehicle specs. However with it installed, one can exploit existing performance specs In a noticeable and appealing way. So for the purpose of this question, absolutely qualifies.

what about “performance chips” are they real, or is it all just fluff? if anyone’s got personal experience or have tested a number of options please do drop your knowledge for link to thread that I can read


But also there are “aesthetic” aftermarket mods which do increase capability of specific activities, allow you access that might otherwise be inadvisable or restricted. Things like aftermarket skid plates or rock sliders. Even though install for these is not plug and play. I think these or others, to the same effect, could also qualify for the list. My thinking is the level of involvement or commitment for these to DIY install is not so overwhelmingly technical.
But I’m not the one making the rules here.
Do you think these kinds of things qualify for such a list? Of instant gratification mods for performance?

so with those qualifications in mind, would anyone be so kind as to provide or point me in the direction of a comprehensive list of modifications which very immediately change your perspective behind the wheel, in terms of speed, maneuverability, terrain, generally just pucker invoking modifications. I’m wondering this because now the 4runner population is, has been, expansive.
The leadtime on a lot of major mod items is huge. And probably even worse with the supply chain issues that the world is dealing with.

If you want to have more power, add a supercharger. Installing a “performance” chip is like adding a fart cannon to a civic. Adding sliders and skid plates will weigh down the car = slower, more gas consumption.

While some rigs are built for looks and the mall, some actually get put to use on the trails. All comes down to preference. Outfitting my rig with a lift and bigger tires to get to places I couldn’t stock or would struggle makes me happy. Decide what you want to use your rig for and then go for it.

Totally. I was just trying to expand the criteria so potential responders weren’t held back or didn’t share because of the confines i place on my specific needs and preferences. Though I’ve posted the thread for personal needs, I also wanted it to be an open discussion for the world of aftermarket mods on 4R. Since YouTube is either very specific or, as you put it “mall mods“ On a lot of the “top/first 4Runner Mods to do”

i’m personally not going to be rock crawling, so that ain’t for me. But the automatic steps on my limited are like Cinderella steps but spaced as if regular stairs. I end up just hitting toe or missing completely, then tripping or slipping on exit.. very awkward position for my gait. Definitely going to lose them or swap to fixed steps. Since the lady of the house wants the step there

 

@Mtbpsych although since you mentioned superchargers, regarding the Magnuson I have read if you add Mag supercharger, then better off as that being the last/only performance mod..
Is this factual or a recommendation worth considering?

What’s your opinion or experiences with SC options for the 4runner?

I just started accumulating parts and preparing to swap limited front for a pro type trim, maybe hood scoop not sure. But def doing away with the chrome everywhere….while fronts all getting stockpiled, I need some bite to go with all that bark.
What about exhaust systems and intakes?
I Just replaced OEM air filter for a K&N washable filter, hopefully to improve mpg but cold air intake seems like an item that would qualify for this list. Any thoughts on intakes? Don’t know that exhaust system qualifies, not being plug and play kind of mod and gets us further away from the question

I did front brakes on a 2016 Subaru Outback with the 3.6L motor yesterday. It was terrifyingly quick and the throttle response was instant.
Point being, I'm now REALLY wondering about getting a Pedal Commander for my "Captain Slow" Trail Snail. It's instant gratification and from everything I see in reviews and videos, it does work for throttle response.

 

I can provide some good insight for you because my '21 4Runner replaced a '13 Outback 3.6R. The throttle response of the Outback was what I was used to and found the electronically dampened throttle response of the 4Runner unacceptable. The Sprint Booster fixed this in less than 30 mins. Worth every penny. It will not make the 4Runner any faster than it is but the response of the engine relative to your throttle inputs is greatly improved. The cool thing is that you can turn it off with the touch of a button to make it as Toyota intended for off road use and for the street, make is any level of snappy you want. There are more than enough settings to suit any tastes.

 

the term "mod" is thrown around a bit too easily IMO. i dont think tint, floormats, LEDs, cubby organizers are mods. they're accessories at best.

pedal commander simply changes the throttle mapping like you said. i could get a heavier right foot and save $200 that way.

F/I options are the Magnusson SC, Rotrex SC and Procharger.

suspension mods, aside from spacers, would be an upgrade in most cases. the stock is very prone to body roll and nose dive. even the bilstein 5100s with stock springs should help the car feel not as tippy at a low cost, relatively speaking.

stock tires are as good as an all season tire, so upgrading to AT or MT will help off roading situations a lot. and they look better.

intake can help, but i personally dont feel intake mods are necessary. maybe a K&N drop in filter at the most. i'm mixed about snorkels.

exhaust? meh, i have not heard this v6 sound good with it.

diff breather is something worth mentioning. affordable mod that is worth getting if youre doing more off roading.

i do wish there were better brake options though. you're strapping on hundreds of pounds in body armor, racks, RTT, bigger tires, on stock brakes. perhaps i'm wrong and better pads and/or fluid is enough. but still wouldnt mind seeing more in that category.

that's all i can think of with my just woken up brain on a sunday morning. feel free to chime in if i missed anything.

All right I know theres at least one study using scientific method to determine what kind of difference K & N makes compared to OEM or dirty OEM And a low cost aftermarket option. The data suggests it’s not a huge or in any way impressive difference, at least that was the findings of this experiment
But my muffin topped limited was definitely a step above today compared to before replacement. Definitely noticeable quicker throttle response than before. Not sure if mpg improved, as most of the time I was so enthused about the new pep in my blue whales step. Surely took consumption beyond eco modes happy place.

And also, can I say IMO Toyota should just come clean and rename “Eco” to a more deserving title… Eeyore mode sounds More like it
