    Evening

They tried very hard to sell me the Toyota Platinum. I always say "no no no" but they offered 10 years 100,000 for $2350, which really sounds like a good deal? Anyone have any thoughts? I do all possible maintenance myself but for 10 years of piece of mind, sounds like a solid deal. I am basically paying cash so Im not amortizing the extra $2350 over the life of the loan.

    Thanks in advance.

Traded in my 2019 Tacoma OR 4v4 w/28k miles, got 34k in trade, about what I paid.

Is it the warranty or maintenance package? And I’m guessing you expect to stay under 10k miles a year, based on you 2019 having 28k miles (if you had it for 3 years).

and let’s see the new runner

    I paid 1405 for an 8 year/125K. Their price for a 10yr/100K is 1360.

Its a 4runner. If anything breaks before 100k, you got a lemon.

also, i am pretty sure there is a thread on platinum warranties by toyota on the tundras.com forum that will steer you right including what the current fair market price is.

What if they were categorized as ware & tear? Then you have to pay out of pocket right?

Fuel pump recall anyways fall under warranty.

They fail before their life expectancy. I only mentioned those issue since everyone seems to think Toyota can do no wrong. Extended warranty also cover future TSBs that are not covered outside of warranty. I got new headlights, leaf springs 3 times and was going to have my windshield seal fixed before my 2010 Tacoma was totaled.

All that is what I call Fluff a lot of talk and little action for the money. Do your regular maintenance as outlined in the service manual and take your chances is my opinion. The price of the extended coverage is worth close to half the cost to repair KDSS or XREAS providing you have a dealer with the tools and knowledge to repair them. Recalls are no charge. Consider how many miles a year you drive and whether you live in a salt belt region before you shell out the bucks. I'm a mechanic and do all my own work so I'm less worried than most but live in a salt belt and still won't pay for the extended warranty. Just my opinion.

That is a good point if OP's 4R got them.

Then the next one that is more likely to break is the windshield right? 2020+ 4Runner Windshield + TSS-P recalibration could be costly I assume. (My 2017 glass only cost me $314 in total. LoL. <as far as I can remember>)

Good point. I've paid my insurance company a premium to cover this as I realize that any aftermarket replacement of the windshield could be problematic. Doubt my 2022 would be as cheap to replace as your 2017 but it is what it is and the tech keeps marching on.

Extended warranties are always a gamble. Most folks develop their opinions based on life experiences. Same thing applies here.

Do you trust all that new technology? That would drive my decision. The drive train is tried and true.

Just remember companies wouldn’t be selling these things if they always lost $$. The house always wins. It’s a gamble.

I respectfully disagree. does OP even have KDSS? even if it is equipped, KDSS has proven to be very reliable over the years. XREAS is out of the question since OP has an ORP. recall items wouldnt even be a concern anyway since that is covered by Toyota.

That said there always can be an exception where KDSS can go wrong, and yes, it can be a pretty penny. But if that was the case people would be getting powertrain warranties left and right. Proper inspection and maintenance of the KDSS periodically should be sufficient to prevent any major repairs/replacement.

IIRC, you can purchase ext warranties as long as you are within the coverage of the "bumper to bumper" warranty. so you have time. shop around at a later time if you feel it is necessary.

Thanks all. As an FYI, when I asked the Lie-Nance manager if I can purchase the coverage tomorrow, in a week, etc. he said "Then it's a used car policy and it goes up 30-40%".

The ole deadline tactic. They tried that on me too. I personally wouldn’t buy an extended warranty but I also wouldn’t discourage someone if they feel safe with one. I would just caution you that a common misconception about extended warranties is that they are an extension of your 3yr/36 factory bumper to bumper. It absolutely is not. There’s plenty of room for them to deny claims based on lack of maintenance on file and other b.s. excuses they come up with. It’s not quite as automatic as 3/36. But obviously it could bail you out if something catastrophic happens. Just some friendly advice from someone who worked in service and shook my head at some of the nonsense.

Funny, my dealer said I could purchase at any time within the 3yr/36K warranty.

    Exactly as @whippersnapper02 said.

Both KDSS & XREAS leak. They are not proven reliable like the powertrain nor lemon either.

    KDSS -

    XREAS -
    upload_2021-11-2_19-38-9.jpg

Both KDSS & XREAS can have lot of miles.

    upload_2021-11-2_19-46-1.jpg

Both KDSS & XREAS can be fixed by dealer no big deal.

Of course. It's a hydraulic system. I'm also aware that XREAS is not as reliable, from doing my research on the forums. I never said it was bulletproof. My point is KDSS has proven to be pretty reliable to the point where it shouldn't be a point of concern, where an extended warranty is necessary. Few forum threads about premature KDSS failure do not represent the overall reliability of the system. Whippersnapper made a comment about KDSS/XREAS failures, insinuating that it is a point of concern. We know it is pretty damn reliable. I've seen the the RX's V6 have issues at less than 10k miles. But it would be an exaggeration to think that the RX's engine is not reliable overall. That's what I'm getting at. There will always be outliers in the data, many of those we see on the forums. From the overall dataset however, it does not appear that KDSS failure is a common issue to where the OP should be concerned about.

I opted out of the extended warranty on my 2021 OR.

FWIW, I did buy a 7 yr, 100k warranty on my wife’s 2013 Mazda CX-9 and it just passed the time limit and mileage limit. I used it to replace a sun visor that quit staying “up” and would flop down in your face. After the deductible, I saved a few bucks but never used the warranty on a significant item as the vehicle has been solid.

So, I passed on the T4R extended warranty….

    Cheers,
    Bob

I bought my'13 used with 79k miles, they pushed the warranty HARD. I said no, this is why I'm buying a Toyota. If I was planning on purchasing an extended warranty, I'd be at the Jeep dealer.

Almost 50k miles later I do not regret this decision.

Personally I would pass, I would be EXTREMEMLY surprised if $2300 worth of stuff went wrong in 100k miles.

You know what,I agree with Redwood 100%....4runners are very reliable vehicles if anything breaks through normal wear and tear it's easy to repair and doesn't cost a fortune.for the most part you just have to keep up with maintaince which is very few and far in between.i think warranty is a waist of money since most of the repairs throughout the life of the vehicle would be from normal use...and sadly isn't covered under warranty.im gonna call up carmax on Monday and refund my warranty and use that money on maintenance.i think that's a great idea.
