Started the 4Runner the other day and found I had very little volume on the radio, as if there wasn't enough "power" getting to the speakers (control knob wasn't doing anything). At the same time, I noticed the back-up camera had failed (no screen). It's a 2014 Premium with ~52k miles. Aside from checking for blown fuses, what's the 1st thing you would look at?
    Many thanks. Driver-Side_100721.jpg Pass-Side_100721.jpg

Is it amplified? Do you have the JBL system?

Dabigono: That looks like the exact same unit I have now. I don't think a good answer will involve installing the exact same unit that is suspect to begin with, but thanks for the offer. Can you tell me why you swapped it out for the Kenwood? Thanks for your reply.
Crank: Haven't seen any JBL tech. I'm pretty sure it doesn't have 13 speakers. Thanks for your reply.

So if it's not amplified, then there's a pretty good chance the amp built into the factory head unit may have taken a dump. Also possible (but not as likely) is a speaker blew and blew so bad its shorting out its voice coil on the pole piece of the speaker, causing it to feed back and short out the amp in the radio. Only way to determine that would be to unplug each speaker to see if the volume returns to normal.

If it's the radio that went, just replace the radio. Lots of people selling their factory head units (I have one from my 16 Trail I need to get rid of myself) that will just swap right in. Maybe a local has one you can borrow to plug in and test?

An aftermarket option is even better, just more expensive, plus you need the install parts and stuff.

Thanks, Crank. Trouble is, the "failure" described above has only happened once. It's not a speaker.
