Haven’t posted in a while. I did the H11 to H9 conversion this weekend. Was running Nightbreakers and one bulb went out in less than 5 months. So I didn’t want to go back to stock bulbs, figured might as well try the H9’s definitely brighter than OEM, hope they last.

Philips claims their H9 bulb lifetime is 400 hours of use. Over many years I’ve never had a halogen headlight (motorcycle or car) burn out. I replace them about every two years before they fail. With the H9 I keep a spare modified bulb in the truck in case one would burn out on a road trip.

That’s a great idea. I’m ordering another set to do the same, thanks!

I've had my H9's in for about 3 years now and haven't burned one out.

One of my halogen fog lights burned out in that time though.

I just keep my old H11's in the glove box in case an H9 burns out. When that happens i'll just throw an H11 in temporarily and order some more H9's. H9's are a great bang for your buck!

So first real test night driving with the new H9’s wow what a difference from the OEM and the Osram Nightbreakers. Should have done this from the get go. I did a manual check after driving on the lens and harness and really didn’t notice anything excessive heat wise emitting from the H9’s.

The H9’s get up over 200° vs ~160° for the H11’s (if I remember correctly).

That doesn’t sound correct. The external surface of a halogen bulb is about 500 degrees C. Some heat radiates to the polycarbonate headlight lens which gets to a much lower temperature. I’ve measured 50 degrees C after 5minutes.
Here’s a thread on the other forum, see post 42 and forward.

Did my break-in oil and filter change last night at ~800 miles. Taking a 300+ mile trip this weekend so just wanted to get it done beforehand. Everything went relatively smoothly except for initially unhooking the front skidplate. Once I got it off and saw how it fit, putting it back on was a cinch. There were some metal flakes in the pleats of the filter, but I think that's expected. Replaced with 0W-20 Pennzoil Platinum and OEM filter (5-pack ordered on Amazon).

Does this mod allow you to use the fog lights only? I would like to shut off the headlights in the fog and run only foggers. Yeah, i know, running foggers only is illegal, but you can actually see better in the fog (heavy rain and heavy snow, too) with fog lights only. I don't think a LEO will stop you in the fog for running only the fog lights. YMMV.

I cannot imagine why anybody would run the high beams in fog , heavy rain or heavy snow.

I tried to do the anytime fog mod and failed on my 2014 with similar failure results as others. There was no white and grey-coiled wire.
I tried to trace other connections to find the fog light feed with no luck. I started to even consider if its a "grounding" circuit to activate fogs. I gave up for a few weeks and the kickpanel cover is still in the back.

Did Rausch Creek on 10/23 and am now officially hooked. Did the off-road consulting 101 class with my cousin riding shotgun. Absolutely amazed at the capabilities of my 4runner. 4lo all day, some crawl control use on steep descents, and rear locker on last mogul obstacle. Had a chance to learn so much - highly recommended for those in the area. Oh - and I’m heading back on 11/6 and 11/7 for the guided ride events! Woohoo… Pics are only so-so and don't do justice the trails and obstacles we did. They don't offer the true perspective of how narrow and steep the trails and obstacles were. Quite interesting running 17psi too...

Those temps I listed were at the bulb base I think (on the back). Again, I could be wrong. But I think that’s what someone reported on Tacoma World in one of the conversion threads.

sorry - I know that feeling all too well as just about every vehicle I’ve ever owned has had that same issue. Except our 2005 Mustang - that rock went through drivers side window courtesy of our then 8yr old son.

sucks for sure, but hopefully quick and easy repair.

LoL, I was responsible for windshield and few glasses at my house in my childhood. It was funny looking because the original glass pattern was never to be found at the time I broke it so forced my dad to have different pattern glasses when I break them playing cricket in the garden.
