$15k to go from 2019 Tacoma OR w/28k miles to 2022 4Runner OR Premium

Hi all

Had a Tacoma for 3 years and thinking of trading her in for a 2022 4 Runner OR Premium. The out the door difference will be 15k for a vehicle 3 years newer.

Thoughts on the deal?

 

What are they giving you for the Tacoma in relation to what you paid for it?

Is the 4Runner being sold at MSRP?

Hard to say without knowing the details. But generally speaking if offered inflated trade in values and buying at MSRP, it would be hard to go wrong.

One tip, put your VIN in Carvana. They gave me about 4K more for a trade than a dealer or Carmax would.

 

I paid 32k and Ill get 32kish. Ultimately no matter what the #s are between trade in and 4Runner price, Im trying to justify the 15k outlay and Im on the fence. Thanks!

 

I am new to Toyota and 4Runners. I did alot of research and reading because I was determined not to buy a car in this covid/supply short market. In the end I decided to buy 2 4Runners. Only time will tell, but I feel it is probably the safest purchase at MSRP out there, even given the looming redesign. Loyalist will keep Gen5 demand high a few years even it the Gen6 is a better truck.

 

Why swap?? I did it for family. I ran out of room in the Tacoma, otherwise I would have kept it. 4Runner is slow as hell, and OLD.

just realize what you are getting in to. I miss my Tacoma like crazy, but I have zero regrets about the swap. Lots of Cush…zero to sixty…..at some point, lots of storage, bad ass off road vehicle

I went from a sport to a venture (off road premium basically…lots of pretty)

 

What's more important to you at this time in your life? 15K or a New Runner? One or the other.....only you know the answer. Good luck whatever you decide

 

Are you getting the 4runner at MSRP? If there is any kind of markup I would say its not worth it. At the end of the day get what makes you happy.

 

If it helps, i paid 34500 otd on a 2019 tacoma trd or 4x4. Had 19k miles. Traded in and got 37500 from a dealer back in May.
Dont know where you are, but call carmax and vroom to get some offers before you take yours in to make a deal. You might be surprised.
Also, like everyone else said, do NOT pay more than msrp for the 4runner if you decide on it.

 

Oh, and if they dont match your carmax offer to within $500-$1000, walk away. Another dealer will take that deal all day long

 

So your getting to use your Tacoma for free, it just boils down to if you want the 4Runner or not. If the 15k is too much, then keep the taco.

 

I had a 97' Tacoma, I loved it, but my 18' 4Runner is like a Cadillac (comfort wise) compared to my old truck. I no longer needed a bed.

I am in the same boat. In Canada, I paid $44k for a 2020 Voodoo Blue Taco DCLB sport premium, added a matching canopy, running boards, racks, 3M… it now has 38,000 km ( 25,000 miles).
Looked at a 2022 4R Off Road Premium. They are offering $48k for my Taco so I pay $10K CND or $8K USD.
I love my truck, we have a small farm, I throw in chain saws, wood, generators, and bush gear, but when I drive across the country every year, the Taco falls short of the 4R.
I also do a lot of fishing and skiing. Nice to throw stuff in the box but nice to keep it warm and secure in the 4R.
Not a bad deal but a though choice. Nice to hear from others who had similar situations.

 

Had a Tacoma for a year (obviously not a long time) and now back in a 4runner (fourth one). No regrets for me personally. The Tacoma is a great truck, but for my situation I decided that if I want a truck, I'll get a full-size. The 4Runner and a utility trailer does everything the Tacoma could do and better IMHO.

 

Good point. On the farm I was always careful with the Taco, not really treating like a work truck and getting an older Tundra or Taco might fit that need. Keep the 4R for outdoor adventures!

 

i would trade it in. toyotas are reliable but its nice to have a fresh bumber to bumber warranty. 15k is a lot of money but its not like ur losing 15K. lets say 3 years from now 2024 im pretty sure the 4runner would be worth more then the tacoma by at least 10K. heak maybe even the full 15K.

 

Thanks for all the responses - many dealers are doing a 2-3k MSRP markup in New England, Im working on finding a model I like without a markup, just MSRP.

 

The hunt was part of the fun for me. My local dealers ranged from 7500-15K over MSRP. I had go go about 200 miles to find dealers at MSRP. I just pulled up a google maps and searched for toyota dealers.

What i found was dealers with markups had the MSPR stricken through on the website with no price listed, whereas dealers with no market adjustment list the MSRP and sales price.

I got to 13.5 out-the-door on an OR Premium 2022. I gotta tell you, the 4 Runner is a higher caliber of vehicle with regards to build quality and quietness. Also the transmission shifts like it should as opposed to the Taco automatic which shifts like a dog past 4th.
