Hello! Newer to the 4Runner community here (bought a 2014 SR5 premium) and I'm starting to explore some options to aftermarket wheels and tires. I'm interested in both the Black Rhino Stadiums and KMC Grenade Off-roads. Obviously, the main difference between them is rotary forged vs. cast aspect. I was just hoping to hear some opinions on both the brands themselves or the style if anyone has them! I'm having a hard time finding any reviews online aside from youtube unboxing videos (already scanned quite a few threads on here too). I'm just running everything stock at the moment too, so if there's any advice on fitment fire away!

Guess there are sort of a couple considerations you need to decide on here...
-Strictly speaking to looks, get literally whatever you want. Its your vehicle dress it up how you think checks all the boxes
-As far as material strength, you'll be hard pressed to find anyone worth their salt arguing that cast anything is stronger than forged anything. Forged wins between the two hands down.
-If you're legitimately worried about breaking your wheels, you either need to look at steel wheels, and/or look at perhaps more well known hard core brands: Raceline (Baja 1000 winning truck wheels), Vision (also Baja 1000 winners), Method (King of the Hammers wheel)

For what its worth, tons of the 'regular' offroad wheels people run are PLENTY strong.

Strength isn’t a major issue for me really (hence the consideration between a forged and cast wheel) I won’t be doing any hardcore off-roading (moderate off-road use at best). I was just hoping to hear general reviews on the brands before I drop a significant chunk of change and ship the wheels across the border!

I'm running the OEM Pro rims with RG 285's. Very happy with them.

Some folks complain about keeping them clean, I just rinse them off when I hand wash the car, no issues. Actually they show less dirt and brake dust than regular aluminum silver rims.

Since we're past the strength question, now we can talk wheely good options! A few very popular names people run around here: OEM like above, Method, Black Rhino, American Racing, SCS, Fifteen52, Fuel, Vision, KMC, Raceline, Relations Race, XD, Pro Comp, Mickey Thompson

There are tons of options, and people love to espouse what they already run. Particulars like offset and backspacing are easy to narrow down, otherwise skys the limit. To put my plug in since I'm here, I've run Pro Comp Series 32 Bandidos - loved the look, never had any issues at all; American Racing Bajas (in my signature) - like the look less, but functionally good; and will likely next go to Methods new line of 700 Trail Series Bead Grip wheels, maybe the 701s or 704s, for looks and strength.

I’ve got it down between the black rhino stadiums and KMC Grenade off roads, as stated above. Was just looking to see what people thought of either make/style if they were running them already, just to see if people really think they're worth the money I'm going to have to spend on getting them into Canada. I see you're running Wildpeaks though-how do you like them?

I think people will (should?) respond that everyone has their personal choice, and if you think they are worth it then I agree with you. This site is way more welcoming than others; there was a guy asking about how to make a lift with 22" rims work, or something like that, and while not most peoples' cup of tea, everyone was super helpful instead of whining about it.
As for the Wildpeaks, I like them a lot. While not my favorite tire overall, leaps and bounds better than my old Duratracs. I've got around 15k miles on this set and theyre wearing well, not really loud but there is a little hum, done everything Ive wanted offroad when at road or lowered pressures. Look pretty good to boot. And they come in the size I run - 255/80r17.

So I'm no expert by any stretch here, but I am a mechanical engineer by trade so I have a clue about some of these things. Someone more educated can correct me if I'm wrong...
Konig/FN wheels' site has this about their process: "Flow Forming Technology involves the application of pressure to the inner barrel of the wheel, while spinning and after it has been casted. This process stretches and compresses the aluminum, which increases tensile strength. In this respect the process shares similar properties to those found in the forging process."

To me it reads like casting with extra steps. Looks like they cast a wheel, then spin the cast so the centrifugal forces force material outwards, filling leftover voids and inherently 'stretching' it as it cools. The only link between forging and this process shares is that an external force acts upon the wheel. Casting just lets the material flow into place as they will, allowing discrepancies in the molecular bonds (grain structure, if you're actually curious), forging you're actively forcing the material into the desired shape, aligning molecular bonds.
With that said, I used to love FN wheels, I’ve just since found manufacturers I like better

Personally, in no order I like Method, SCS, Fifteen52, Black Rhino, and Vision wheels. All very well known to be very strong, and look good to boot.

I mean in my above post we're sort of splitting hairs. There are of course metallurgical processes that yield higher strength, but this is also sort of diminishing returns to a point for all of us right. Most of us arent going to get Raceline $900 each custom cut billet wheels or $500 each forged beadlocks. Even though theyre the strongest. We're all leaning towards maybe forged maybe cast, trustworthy long as they have a good track record, and look good. This strength conversation frankly doesn't come into play for most of us in everyday driving or wheeling. Maybe if youre fixing to drop the front end onto the edge of one rim sans tire, with any regularity, then look into yield strength and plastic deformation... otherwise these companies know what they're doing

I have the Stadiums. They've been on for maybe 18K miles. I'm very happy with them overall. No issues balancing or anything. I believe they're compatible with TRD center caps, so that's a nice option to have. The center caps they come with look good, too.

So Id like to tweak the look of my TRD premium wheels… would like to either remove the toyota symbol in the center and have a plain black cap or id really like to have a TRD logo cap but cant seem to find a confirmed fitment to this wheel.. ANYBODY know if a TRD center cap will fit this wheel?

Im going to either wrap or plasti dip the bright ring in the center black. Last resort would be plastidip the emblems but i would really prefer they were just gone altogether. Dont think id be fond of just poping them out and having the slots show either…

Headed towards the black out vinyl inlays as shown

    thanks all!

I plastidipped mine just to get rid of that middle brightness, cheap and effective for my spare set (which have winters now, but eventually will get the stock duellers installed for long highway road trips)

I also HyperDip my wheels a few months ago and have been happy with them. HyperDip has more of a paint-like feel compared to the rubber-like PlastiDip. Used Satin Black and Anthracite for the Toyota emblem. Eventually I’ll get them powdercoated but they are good for now. 2E55EED0-A7D6-4D3D-A909-E259A9DFC6F1.jpg

Looks incredible. How did you manage the lug nuts? Thinking this is a great alternative to powder coating which I’d like to do down the road. Any tips or suggestions for a new user?

Thank you. I wouldn’t worry about the lugs because they will get scuffed up when you take them off. I initially used several heavy coats on the lugs but it didn’t last. As for the rims, clean and degrease before you start. Use several light coats to build then go heavier on the last two for even coverage. Also make sure it’s not too humid outside or it may not turn out as smooth. I did my fifth wheel (spare) when it was hot outside and it didn’t turn out like the others. Wasn’t bad, just not as smooth. Pretty simple to do. I also used some tire dressing on the tires so the excess overspray was easy to peel off.

I chose SCS Ray10’s as I was attracted to the -38mm offset on 17x9. It’s on 295/70/17’s and 3” lift. I did bmc and C4 lo pro bumper w/high clearance

I have some meh fuel rims, but, want some bead lock methods, and will be what i get next. But i understand everyones wants, and needs/use is wicked different. Also, if your going to add a lift, its a good time to get your off set figured out. Best of luck with whatever road you go down mate.

just your basic black plastidip. totally removable should you not like it or want to change it up. I would recommend using a can per wheel just to make sure its thick enough to easily peel off. At some point I'll likely get them powder coated for a more permanent look :)
