Replacing Shock Absorbers 2014 4runner Limited

    Hi, new member here. Have owned 4Runners since 2004. Love em!
    Took my 2014 4Runner Limited in for it's 100K maintenance today at my Toyota dealership. They sent me a video showing that all 4 shocks are leaking. They said that to replace them I'd have to also replace the parts of KDSS system for $6400!!! The cheaper option is to use after market shocks for $2000 But I lose the KDSS system then and the ride will be rougher they claim.
    I plan on replacing this vehicle when the Next Gen becomes available which would be the fall of 2022 from what I have read. That's assuming the current supply chain issues don't push back the introduction further.
    I don't do heavy off road driving. It's mainly limited to dirt roads and driving through snow. Any thoughts on which way I should go ? Are there any other options?

    If I was in your shoes, I'd just have the shocks replaced with stock, non KDSS shocks.

    The ride isn't that bad and you're gonna trade it in anyway.

    Limited doesn’t have KDSS.

    If they mean XREAS, just yank it.

    May be tell them not to do anything with shocks. Limited does not have KDSS. They have Xreas.

    I would go to a good 4wd shop and get some good shocks. Before that I will do my research on what good shocks I will get. KDSS can be expensive fix but Xreas can be easily replaced with any shock. You can get really high-end suspension for around $3000 and labor at an expensive 4wd shop is around $600-700.

    Or this would be an opportunity for you to get a lift.

    If you replace xreas with basic lift with Bilstien5100 its about $400-500 + labor.

    I have a set of oem front struts & rear shocks you can have for the shipping cost. Took them off my 2019 Off Road at about 3500 miles on the odo to replace with Eibach.

    Thank you guys for your input. Apparently LandCruiser is correct, I do not have KDSS. According to the manual there would be a KDSS warning light on the instrument panel if KDSS is installed. I do not have that warning light. So I must have Xreas.
    I'm not clear on what the difference between the 2 systems is. They both seem to be sealed , interconnected systems. I plan on talking to a mechanic friend and see what he says. I suspect i will be installing some after market shocks.

    I'm sure you will learn more online or YouTube. Simple way to separate is KDSS is hydraulic system connected to the sway bar vs Xreas is shocks connected to each other cross linked.

    I just added Dobinsons to my 2011 4 runner limited. They are great around 1000 for the shocks and springs and 500 for install. They ride great and lifted also. Went with heavier springs as they installed Arb front bumper and winch. You can go with regular springs.

    This is a solid option, if you're not interested in changing the ride at this point.

    Even basic aftermarket shocks are going to run $3-400, and then you'd still need a shop to disassemble and reinstall the struts. "Take-offs" like this should bolt up, and be pretty simple for a shop to do, if you're not inclined to do it yourself.

    The front struts would still need disassembly, as I don't have the spring/strut assembly, just the struts.

    Oh, got it. I assumed you replaced the whole coilover.

    It may not be helpful to OP but I have rear shocks, rear springs, front stock upper control arms for free pickup in Denver CO.

    You can have any level of shocks or coilovers installed. It just really depends on how much you want to spend and or if you want a lift.

    i opted to lift my 16 limited with kings coilovers.

    Sure do. They're still on the shelf. I notice you have a 4th gen 4R. Will these fit?
