Hello all, I am a brand new owner, having only purchased my new 4Runner 5 days ago. The question I keep getting is will I be getting a cage for my catalytic converter before it gets stolen? I haven't heard about that happening in my neighborhood or town, however in one of the towns I work in, I have heard about that happening. Any thoughts on whether or not I should be considering a cage and if so, what brand? Thanks in advance, and thanks for letting me join! Lisa

Hello Lisa, welcome to the forum. Catalytic theft is a growing problem, there is a member here that makes a skid plate cover to protect the cat. from theft, but i am old and can’t remember what his name is lol. I was wondering if you could discuss this problem with the insurance company, and maybe they would help cover the cost of the protection piece. Just a thought.

    How does that work?

Do you sit in a gun tower all night every night watching your rig?

You must be a light sleeper.

Cat rats will be long gone by the time you put on your plate carrier.

Someone has suggested in another thread to "mark" your CAT with identifying information - such as the way I mark some of my tools. I use a scribe driven by compressed air. Simply marking it with the vehicle license plate number and state would provide some level of deterrence. It would make it harder to fence the CAT and make it traceable to where it came from.

That was me. I inscribe my driver's license # on most large/expensive items that either have no serial number or an easily removed serial # or VIN, such as a flat bed trailer, generator, catalytic converter, etc. It's a unique # that will tell any police officer who that # belongs to and the bad guys can't do anything with it. If that item gets stolen, I can have the police enter that number into the NCIC under what's called an "owner applied number."

I'm sure others on here have a more exact number, but a person I know had the cat stolen from his Prius. It was going to cost him $2,000.00 for an OEM cat. Prices of cats are absurd, especially OEM units.

Yeah, that happens all the time to me. I park far away from everyone in a big empty lot, then someone has to park right next to me. 4Runners must be magnetic.

Snikel Fritz that is a nice looking set up thanks for posting. I was thinking though for those of us that fluid film the frame regularly I am assuming the full skid would need to be removed first each time before putting on fluid film? What are your thoughts since you have ok yours? Or can you still get a sprayer up there with success ?

Sure is nice to live where I don't have to worry about stuff like this. Only have to worry about running into a Moose, bear, or wolf in a bad mood. :)

The thugs who are going to to rip it apart for the components inside, why do they care what is inscribed on the cover?

You dont rip a Cat into pieces and then go recycle it. You bring it as a whole. cities in municipalities have laws requiring the seller to prove vehicle ownership and provide ID before the shop can purchase the Cat. VIN etching is not a thing for nothing.

So for all the cats that are being stolen and sold without etching, how is the law requiring proof of ownership working?

First you're bitching about the etching not working and now you want to bitch about those that dont get their cat etched?

    Whatever man.

These protective measures are all assuming the thief wont cut the skid plate/whatever to get to the cat. I ordered the RSG Skids and it's the same story. Cat Protection is even in the name lol. I didn't get it for that though but still, looking at the pics I'm not sure how much cat protections it's going to offer.
