    Hello,
Could anybody please explain me why there are two different quantities for engine oil in the manual?
When I change the oil, I put the filter in, screw it back and fill it with 5.7l (6.0qt). Why do I need to know the quantity without the filters and what does that even mean ?

There was a time when it was common to change the oil without changing the filter. With/without is referring to the filter. If you change oil and replace the filter you need to add 6.6 qt. Oil change only and don’t change the filter you add 6.0 qt. The difference is due to the oil trapped in the filter canister.

Somewhat pointless these days with synthetic oil and high mileage oil changes. Can’t imagine anyone is not replacing the filter with each oil change.

You’ve been filling it almost a quart low.

My engine takes near 7 quarts to get just under full mark on dipstick. 6.6q only reads halfway between low and high notches with engine warm.

Cool, thanks for the explanation. Makes sense. So pretty outdated.
With 6qt my dipstick reads kinda full. I will let the car sit overnight and measure tomorrow morning.

Not that it applies here but some motorcycle manufacturers call for oil changes at 5K and oil filter changes at 10K. As to the 4R, there may be instances when you're on the road and an oil change is necessary, but conditions don't allow for a filter change too. Knowing the quarts needed to facilitate that saves a lot of dip stick checking.

I noticed this too when I did my first oil change a few weeks back.

Part of our challenge is getting a good dipstick reading, which is a known issue with our 5th gens.

By the way, does anyone know how much oil is too much, in the event you overfill by say 1/2 quart? Any idea what would happen?

Half quart might be ok, but too much leads to potential hydro lock and/or aeration in the oil. Hydro lock can break things. Aeration can lead to premature ware.

Maybe look into a fumoto valve for easy and controlled oil drainage

We've used Fumoto valves on applications ranging from snowmobiles to farm tractors, our 4Runner has one too. An "overfill" is one of the reasons it could be used, plus the no mess draining the oil from the oil pan is great.

You might know this already, but pulling the dipstick and letting it sit 10-15 minutes before checking is the only way I can get an accurate reading.

The manufacturer has to put “idiot” language in the manual to prevent any lawsuits.

Can't believe I didn't see this thread years ago but can't tell if this was a serious question.

Seriously, none of this is hard to understand.

    Filter changed?

    Yes - 6.6 quarts
    No - 6.0 quarts
No filter used at all - Buy raptor lights

And plan to get stranded by the side of the road with a check engine light sometime in the future.

Hope they at least put the housing back so it doesn't leak. At least they can get some miles out of it.
