    Hey guys/gals,

As you may or may not know the new tundra is coming into to play. My wife and I own a 21 rav 4 adventure and 21 venture 4runner. She agreed that the new tundra if I trade the 21 adventure rav 4 towards it. Only problem is I admire and love the 4runner. I have to let her drive it lol. I don’t know if I can. This is my dream 4 runner lol. We are planning to buy a camper nothing huge but it is the reason I want a new tundra due to the 12k towing capacity. Yes the camper will be from4k to o 6k at most and I won’t tow that with the 4Runner.

So options. The twin turbo tundra is 389hp 479 torque plenty. The hybrid model announced last night is 437hp with 583 torque I believe. Just awaiting gas mileage of both with release info. If you were in my shoes would you go hybrid? We plan on traveling a lot. I am in no way about hybrid at the current time but if I did it would be Toyota due to the experience they have. They have had hybrid out a long while. Just looking for feedback and maybe I can convince the wife to keep thr rav4 for her fingers cross. I just do not want to give up my venture 4Runner as her daily. Regardless we are a Toyota family.

    Also wanted to add.

A Toyota engineer explains why the turbo will be reliable before people post crap about it. It’s not the 1980s when turbo had bad reputation. They test for hundred thousand of miles. I’m in no way affiliated with this dude. He has some good explanation. Just discovered by hours of research. Highly suggest to follow to keep up with Lexus/Toyota news.

Also hybrid is going to lag behind by a couple months. So you would also need to wait a little longer for that.

More power always sound great but who knows

Even modern turbos, although better, have a very hard life. Regardless of whatever your user manual says, do oil changes at no more than 3k miles. Even with synthetic. Mechanics are seeing that early and often oil changes have a huge benefit for turbo engines. They are seeing turbo failures still being common in 5k or more oil change intervals. For a car they see serviced every 3k miles, no issues at all.

Man, I’d hate to get rid of the 4runner if it was me. How about a nice off-road type teardrop? Then instead of traveling, you could call it going on expedition :p

Those Tundra hybrids might be more efficient, but I wonder if it would make up for the driving experience and off road versatility of the 4runner.

Not to mention, the color of that 4runner is badass. I’d have trouble deciding too!

I agree yet something in back of my mind wants to do it. I mean what would you select? Ford, Chevy, or Toyota as a full size truck? Forgot about being bias if you are as well lol.

This truck is honestly for travel for the most part only pulling a camper. The 4 runner won’t be gone and if I’m lucky keep the rav for the wife but I have feeling it has to go for trade in on a truck. She is however only 20miles away from work Monday thru Friday if she had to drive the runner.

Yes that’s an option but it must have a bathroom for her as I don’t care about that lol. I guess I got to compromise.

So I wonder how many miles I could get on the tested new tundra? I know know one doesn’t know but 200k would be nice. I would change oil very often reguardless if manual states 10k. I would be willing to do 3k if needed not longer then 5k.

    .

Well, then maybe this is just a matter of setting ground rules. She can drive it, but just tell her to not touch your levels and to remember where you like your seat set. Lol

    Just kidding…but no, seriously. I jest I jest. :D

Also if your of fan of Toyota you have to admit they did it right on marketing. That first gen 4Runner at the beginning drives me nuts. I’m a Toyota fan love the fj as well in the video. I’m not from California but loved how they used the wild fires in the video. I’m east coast.

I don’t know man. It seems like you are smitten. You might not recover from Tundra lust. That’s cool. Just remember, if the Rav 4 goes….ground rules for the 4runner lol.

Im not a truck guy, but if I had to choose a make, toyota would be it. However, I’d probably go into analysis paralysis once it comes to deciding hybrid or non-hybrid.

I think the best option is wait until 2022 mid or late year perhaps. Just see if there are any issues and others experience but it’s going to be hard to do that. It’s probably the best approach to get a 23. I’m pretty certain you will see more new tundras versus other make in models at dealership hence the cut down in production. I think they wanted to focus on new product first.

4Runner is made in Japan. Keep it forever. Get rid of that stupid Rav4 if you want to buy the stupid Tundra. Leave that Hilux Surf AKA 4Runner alone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I for one am waiting on the next gen Sequoia. Fingers crossed that they put all the off road tech from the new tundra on it.

The tundra is not the Land Cruiser. It never will be.

    Turbo hybrid electric motor? Really?

Let’s have an ad campaign where we show a really cool truck that is really down to earth and back to basics that we don’t make anymore, the first generation 4Runner, then show some technological nightmare family truck that has nothing to do with it.

No one said it was a land cruiser it does share common elements that’s all I was pointing out. I need a truck to pull a camper over 5k pounds. Keeping my 4 runner as that will not go anywhere unless it’s for another 4Runner in the future. I just will not buy dodge, Chevy, or Ford when it comes to truck (personal reasons). 4Runner is for trails tundra for pulling camper. 437hp and 583 torque is impressive on the tundra.

I seriously doubt they will make a short cab short bed version, but one of those with a V-8, not hybrid, factory locked, could be made into a reasonable trail rig if you can still remove the front bumper, which I’m not sure you can with all the electronic nannies, and then rip off the bed and install an off-road custom fab flatbed.

Everything I have read states 4 door version only no access cabs. 5.5 ft, 6.5 ft, and 8.1 ft are the bed option lengths. I wouldn’t hardcore trail it that’s what 4runners, Tacoma’s, and land cruisers are for in my opinion. Not saying though it cannot be built to do some serious off-roading. I just prefer 4Runner because it is not as wide on small trails compared to a full size truck.

Four real doors and a 5.5 foot bed is an absolute yacht. You can’t even fit that in most of the parking spaces around here.

I guess you could get a second job and keep all of them, LOL. But seriously, I would either get rid of the wheezy RAV4 or forget about a new Tundra and buy a used truck to pull the trailer. You only have so many options. I guess another option, is to sell the 4Runner since you are going from off road camping(?) to plush trailer park life.

The new Tundra isn't going to substantially improve your gas mileage with a trailer, at least I doubt it. And despite what the "engineer" in the video says, a turbo motor will never be as reliable as a simple V8. Toyota knows they need someone "independent" to dispel potentially damaging public impressions. I believe Toyota put him out there to feed us Toyota propaganda. He may be sincere, but COME ON a million miles, but with how many repairs.

The video was clearly over the top and not the product of a cautious engineer.

I have a 2018 Tundra Limited and a 2021 4Runner ORP. We recently moved to a place where we can drive ATVs and Side by Sides around town much of the year. So I'm looking at a SxS for groceries, hardware store, restaurants, and recreation. I don't know if you have that option, but if you do I'd suggest a SXS and a small toy hauler trailer.

Anyway, good luck with your decisions.

Keeping the 4Runner for sure. The rav will go as trade it’s paid off. Wife wants to go out west and hit state parks about 4 months maybe 5 out of the year. We came to an agreement we both hate crummy hotels and we don’t know the sanitation of those places versus a camper. I think I could easily take light/moderate trails with a full size. I just trust Toyota over the other options it’s a personal preference. This engine has been tested for a while now it’s not the 1980s turbo. The crazy part if you buy low mileage Toyota within the 3 year old range it’s not much more for new. I am literally within 20 minutes from another state that we ride side by sides. It is the best thing ever as you wave at police as you head to the trails lol. Seen the campers that also have a hauler for side by sides. Would love to take one out west.

I have a 2007 Volvo with a turbocharged 5-cylinder. I've owned it since 90k, it has 230k on it now. Been doing oil changes every 6K miles or so with full synthetic. 0 turbo issues in all of that time. I wouldn't worry too much about turbos.

Honestly I would probably be more worried about the hybrid technology over the Long Haul, but I probably would still buy the hybrid model just for all that torque. I think the TRD off-road model is going to be the sweet spot of the new Tundra, and from what I understand that comes standard with the Hybrid drivetrain only.

It is not about turbo alone, the whole thing has changed. And a guy like me doesn't like that much change. Look at the interior of that thing, a gigantic screen, that looks stupid to me. Buttons and electric thingies everywhere. Digital speedometer is disgusting. I don't know about the rest of you, but I hate those kind of things. All that nonsense should come as an option, not standard.

IMHO, if you can... get the hybrid. The torque from the electric motor will help a ton with towing.
I think you should also be able to get tax breaks/credits for the hybrid.

We traded a hybrid Rav 4 in for the 4Runner. Everybody knows electric motors are great for off the line punch, but what people don't know is how much they help for passing power.
The electric motor will cover up whatever turbo lag there is when you need power NOW.

We live in the West. We have no interest in a medium size or large trailer ourselves, we camp and/or stay in hotels, we usually pick decent Hotels and Inns and we avoid dumps. If we want to commune with nature and enjoy a camp fire we camp.

The only advantage of a trailer that I can see right now is comfort, and maybe keeping dogs with you on the trip.

A trailer is not fun for me as they are too much work to store, maintain and haul. I realize every one likes something different and we do tow a trailer for toys, or we sometimes tow our boat, but so far the trailer bug has not bitten me. And if it did, I would buy a toy hauler. I just find pulling a trailer an annoying pain.

I sort of compare the cost and hassle of keeping our family house boat, which I help maintain. We can't use it enough to justify ownership with the cost of maintenance, over simply renting one for a week or 10 days each summer. I think a trailer might be somewhat the same deal for me, although house boat costs are much higher, I split it three ways.

Low hassle is the best trip sometimes. A couple of years ago I left the wife at home and took my daughters on a cross country trip (taking my youngest from California to her new college in Boulder Colorado just before school started for both of them) that trip included Zion and two other National Parks, and then a couple of days of rafting at Royal Gorge. We stayed in some very nice hotels for what I thought was a reasonable cost. We hiked and saw some beautiful scenery. No hassles with towing, parking, or setup, and we ate at some really good restaurants. We camped a couple of nights in Cotapaxi right on the river with the rafting company, with mountain goats climbing the steep ledges on the other side of the river. The rafting company fed us. It was a very easy and enjoyable trip, but we had it planned and reservations in advance.

I guess what I found out is that I can buy a hell of a lot of nice hotel rooms and meals for the $40K I might tie up in a trailer, not including maintenance, storage, insurance, registration, taxes, along with extra gas and trailer accessories. Plus you need to equip your truck for towing extra weight. To get your moneys worth out of a trailer you have to use it a lot I think.

I don't know, the jury is still out for me on the value of a trailer for my needs.

Let us know how it works out for you.
