AC, when did you call? Are you local? I was told it had not been on the lot very long, but not told when it arrived. Gil

I'm more comforted by real world data than staged crash test results -- as important as such tests are.

In any case, it may be worth pointing out that the "marginal" rating for that particular kind of crash might show the risk of more lower-body injuries from such a crash -- but not significant increases in fatalities, which is what's measured by the real world data linked above. If there's a data set on injuries as opposed to deaths I'd be interested in seeing it.

But as it is, I think it's clear that the 4Runner is one of the safer vehicles out there.

Presumably Toyota will have worked on improving the crash test results for the next gen, and hopefully that will translate into an even safer 4Runner than we already have. But I'd feel quite good about the safety of the truck as is.

Singleminded your point about the type of drivers playing a role in numbers of fatalities and crashes brings to mind that crash test vehicles are driven by dummies. Gil

@GLS glad you and your passenger seem to be OK. That looked awful.

Great to know that this rig can take a beating and protect any people inside really, really well.

Man, crazy accident! Glad that you and your family made it out well. Accidents do happen and I'm glad that you all came out on top. Yes, these are super safe vehicles, almost tank like. The 2020 is my 4th one, as you can tell, I don't really like them... <sarcasm> Nice one on the 2022!

    Cheers,

    Sean

@GLS was there third row seating in your crashed runner? I see airbags bag there.

edit: Im curious if all 4runners have airbags that run all the way to the rear windows

No, it didn't have 3rd row seating. I suspect that all of them are made with airbag curtains from stem to stern as it is probably easier (and cost effective) to make them that way rather than add them later for the third row. The airbag installations probably occur earlier in the mfg. process than third seat installation. The headliner was a wreck after the side curtain airbags deployed. Gil

I will be inspecting my trailer chains this weekend and replacing if needed. No way I want to be the cause of an accident like this. I always lock and key my trailer to the hitch before moving, yank on hard to ensure it's seated, but I wonder if this is an example of not being physically locked or adjusted correctly.
