Toyota engine oil 00279-0WQTE-01 vs 00279-0W201-01

Hey guys, just a quick question.

On my wife's Rav4, Toyota factory used 00279-0WQTE-01, while on my 4Runner, they used 00279-0W201-01.


So I tried to order a few quarts of each enough to do an oil change.

To my surprise, the containers are identical. Specs identical...

U tried a google search and didn't find any info, so I am here.


So is there a real difference besides one is cheaper?

 

If it’s the same oil weight and viscosity I don’t see why it would be different unless they’re using different blends.

 

One is bulk and one is by the qt.

Prolly just for tracking purposes so they know where the oil is going and when to order more.

 

Some folks said that this could be due to Toyota changing the oil supplier from Nippon Oil to Exxon-Mobil (current). Not sure if it is true or not but seems feasible. Both are full synthetic 0w20. Probably they still use Nippon Oil currently, I am not exactly sure.

Edit: On the label on the back of the bottle, there should be some text detailing who manufactures the oil. If you see both are made by Exxon, then this theory is not correct.

 

May I ask, where did you order it from? Having a tough time finding an online source for OEM oil.

 

You can find it on Amazon, but it is so expensive that it makes you run away. Just search by part #00279-0W201-01

 

I ordered from my local stealership, but I'm just going for Mobil 1 full synthetic which costs $22+ per 5 Quarts, when it's on sale...in fact I just bought a few today.

 

I might make the swap but holding out until warranty gets closer to ending.

You're welcome. But don't forget that Toyota oil is Exxon-Mobil, so you going with Mobil 1 0w20 full synthetic should not void any warranty. Obviously your choice, but it is way more convenient to buy Mobil 1 due to its large availability.

 

Is Mobil and Toyota oil the same? I thought (from reading most of that million page thread) that they were different! I just don't want to chance anything with the dealerships around me. I've seen how incompetent they are and just want to ride it out for a bit longer. I am eager to move onto doing my own thing entirely.
