    Most people doing engine swaps on 2nd gens will go for the 5vz (or less common 3rz) used on the next gen 4runners. You could probably put an LS in it but you would start having issues with the additional power breaking stuff on the trail.

    98 and 86 4Runners
    Chevy 4.3. Cheap and easy to work on. I have a rebuilt one sitting on an engine stand that will go in my 92 pickup when the 3.0 gives up the ghost.
