Probably shopping for a TRD ORP once the new model year hits because I definitely want BSM. One other feature that is absolutely stunning to me that has not been on that trim level was the lack of auto on/off headlights (NOT auto hi-beams). Does anyone know for sure, one way or the other, if Toyota is finally adding that to the TRD ORP?

Only pros and limiteds have the auto headlights option on the stalk. Why Toyota didn’t make it available for all models is unclear

Why Toyota does a lot of things confuses me.

No memory seat on anything but the Limited is another one. Also, no dual zone climate control on anything but the Limited or Pro.

For that matter I don't get why on the GX 460 you have to get a Luxury to get MTS and Crawl Control. That one makes no sense at all.

makes me wonder, if trd pros are really trd orp and the pro parts are simply added at the port .. do they add the stalk and dual zone there too ? Or is that configured at the factory ? I believe both require programming

    It's a long list...
I can't believe it still isn't on the premiums or all the 2022 MY at this point. Since 2020, the models have come even closer as far as features (Smart key, etc) it is even easier for Toyota to do this.

@Daytonaviolet to answer your question, the PRO is built with the Auto stalk and dual zone at the factory. It's only the cosmetic parts that get added post-port. The real difference in being able to have auto headlights comes from the programming in the main body MPX ECU. The solar sensor in the dash is the trigger for the auto headlights (Auto-high beam is the forward recognition/LDA camera) The Pro & Limited have the coding in the MPX enabled for the sensor input to toggle the headlight relay on or off based on ambient light. For the 2020+ folks that want auto headlights, it is probably as easy as putting the solar sensor in and swapping the MPX out for the TRD PRO/Limited MPX part numbers (Get a TRD PRO MPX if you have a TRD model, Limited for SR5, as there is other software based on the trim, and you CANNOT put a MPX from a smart key vehicle into a conventional ignition vehicle) As far as I know you need the programming in the ECU from the factory. No way to flash it via tech stream. The actual stalk on the column is mechanically the same for the switch. Only difference is whether "DRL" or "AUTO" is printed on it.

Awhile back on the forum there were guys that were buying a $7 sensor on eBay and putting it in that little hole up on the dash to get auto headlights. There’s a spot on the dash by the windshield with a little cap on it. Pull off the cap, and it’s wired for auto dimming headlights. Or something.

    Anybody remember that thread?

I know that thread. I don’t recall them receiving auto headlights from just adding the sensor. What I believe they got was auto dimming dash and radio.

Are there parts that we can purchase for the 2022 to add auto headlights and dimming display? A new stalk and a light sensor perhaps?

I used to work at Honda and built the dashboards. I know it's not Toyota but I reckon it's close to the same. If you build a car that has auto headlights vs not the entire wiring harness is different. There will be no wire leading to that plastic cap in the dash. On top of that your signal arm off the steering wheel where the lights are controlled would be missing the auto selector.

I imagine it would be a HUGE pain in the dick to add it afterwards.

It strange but my Canadian 2022 TRD Off-road has auto lights standard. So maybe if you can find Canadian parts maybe you can install it in your truck. But now I have no option to turn headlights off, I got 3 positions on the lever - Auto, headlights on and parking lights on.

God am I relieved to hear that. I am waiting for my 2022 Off-road. I was told it should be here next month. Luckily here in Canada our models usually have more options than the American ones. That being said we do pay more so it all works out lol. Would be tough to remember to turn them on after my last 2 vehicles having auto headlights.

Yes, we have no choice for TRD Off-road features, but it comes loaded with all the modern stuff. We have dual climate control, smart key, auto lights, rear, side and front cameras, Navigation system, bling spot monitoring and sort of electronic driver aids. Toyota now can track you everywhere and remotely stop/start engine. Personally I don't need most of those features but we have no choice : )

Ive had a 2015 Tacoma SR5, 2016 Tacoma TRD sport + tech package, and then 2020 tundra TRD sport premium. The 2022 4runner had no other package options as far as tech or premium.

Can you tell me if the offroad has the rear window up and down buttons from the outside next to the emblem?

Yes it is has the buttons, I could open an close rear window from outside. You need to have your working smart key with you though.

have you noticed your lights will not turn off on auto unless you open and close your door?
So frustrating. What I wouldn’t give for an “off” option…

I have a 2022 TRD off premium and added auto headlights
Body ecu part # 89220-35650, Light sensor 89121-30020, head light switch 84140-35171. Part numbers from a TRD Pro same year.
The auto head light function works perfect the only problem I have is that my XM radio icon on the radio disappeared. I don't know why it would affect the radio but it did.
I switch my body ecu back and the XM icon comes back.. If anyone knows how to fix this one problem would be a lot of help.
FYI you have to hand shake the smart key ecu to get you remotes to work after body ecu is replaced.

Are you talking about when turning off the car? There should be an option in the head unit menu for that (time vs. opening doors).

FYI all, all 4Runners have auto on/off lights: if you leave them on, they turn off when you turn off the car, and turn back on when you start it again. Not the same as true auto, but good enough IMO if you can't be bothered to turn on your own headlights.

I don't think that's the case for all trim lines. The headlights don't turn off automatically on my '23 ORP, even thought the DRLs do, and event hough it has automatic high-beam dimming. I would trade the latter for automatic turn-off at shutdown, but I'm sure there's a reason they set it up like this that I'll discover off-road.

My 2011 has off, parking lights, auto, and on.

I can leave it in auto and the headlights will turn on and off as needed depending on current conditions. I leave it on auto 100% of the time and never change it I haven’t touched the switch in probably 5 years.

I ordered the light sensor from jpanime2014 on eBay after seeing here that people had good results. I received it after about a week and installed it yesterday in my 2021 ORP. Now my display changes between night and day automatically. I wish I had known about this 2 years ago.

It did not give me auto headlights, but I don't really care about those anyway. I turned them off on my Tacoma, because I wanted control over the high beams.

@toyotatron this was a while ago, but great info. It seems easy enough to swap the parts, but how do you "handshake the smart key ecu to get your remotes to work after body ecu is replaced"?
