What do you carry in your 4R all the time and why?

I carry my wife and 4 kids because I love them and I want them with me.

 

Just myself and my ego.

I am incapable of relationships with others.

No-sting spray, because I'm a sissy...for the kids yall for the kids
Bandaids (kids and adults)/instant ice pack/sling/bandage/"nurse tape" cramer tape/finger splints/gauze antiseptic ointment or spray/sunblock/ bug spray markers both bark and bright

 

Surf wax and sunscreen.

 

That ego has to big and comfy to keep you company lol enjoy solitude

 

A roll of toilet paper....you just never know...

 

Friend / fellow wheeler of mine gave me a molle gunshot trauma kit complete with tourniquet, quick clot, and pressure bandages. I need to go take a first aid course on it, as it's just about useless to me, not being trained in it.

We were still using belts for tourniquets when I was in the Army back in the 1990's.

I also have box of bandaids for cuts and scrapes.

 

This could get extensive. First and foremost is my pew pew followed by first aid and emergency trauma kits. Get home bag has all the same in it as well as well change of clothes, some non perishable items ya know incase a Twinkie truck can’t be found. Then in the back recovery gear, some small tools, area maps, etc more water a couple of blankets that I’m not sure why I have them in the middle of summer in there, flashlight a beach towel, hammock, and some various odds and ends

 

Jump pack, medkit and a fire extinguisher.

 

Sounds like mine including a well stocked 'get home bag'. I came from the Jeep community, having owned several and am very glad I bought this 4Runner. Lots of space! Not only should the list of 'what-ifs' for your vehicle be extensive, so should your 'Get Home' be as well. I urge people to think about what they need if they had to hoof it home. The on-line prepper community is a good source of information.

Agreed we have a small stuff sack in the event my wife is with me or one of the kids. My wife also carries the same minus sbr in hers. Out of curiosity what bag do you keep? I originally had just a Swiss bag from sams club because everything fit but I’ve since upgraded to the vertex gamut

 

Wife vehicle has a non-descript bag in that hides it's purpose. Basically she would look like a student from afar and we live in a college town. I have a large black ruck that I bought from the PX in Doha in '03'. Only one that I can find that carries my longer take-down pew-pew. It's strapped to a flexible molle panel and rides in back safe but easily goes into bag in one go and keeps everything upright in bag. Commercial bags made for this purpose just scream what they are IMO. I'll see if it has a brand name on it tomorrow.

 

No brand name or label I could find on it. Just a expandable black ruck with waist belt.

This will date me, but I still have a compass that I transferred to my 4Runner from my Tacoma.

 

I have a compass in my get home bags. I even have a crank emergency radio because you just never know when electronics could fail or …… well ya know lol.

 

Using a GMT watch as compass.

 

I think you got it pretty well covered except for maybe a handheld compass as mentioned elsewhere, plus some eats.. Good list!

What frequency does it operate on?

You need to change your handle to Radar.

 

Point the GMT hand at the sun, and the dial (12 o'clock) will point north.

The angle between the 12 hour and 24 hour hands is always the same as the angle between the GMT hand and 12 o'clock on the dial. Simple, does the job.

 

CAT style TQs are pretty simple to use. No training needed. You could watch a video on YouTube and practice on your own thigh once and be proficient. IMO storing it correctly so it's useable and not all cinched up on itself is a bigger training issue than the actual use of the thing

 

ACR personal locator beacon (no subscription required - simply open the antenna and press the "oh $hit I need help now" button, it's the same signal sent out by a downed air craft)

NOCO jump pack - best brand I have found. Mine has jump-started my F450 diesel.

Small swiss army knife w/fingernail clippers (and key chain)

 

Duct tape and skittles

 

If I'm close to home not much. If I'll be on a road trip and there is even the possibility of hitting a trail I pack a tire plug kit, an air compressor, and a battery charger pack thingy.

I used to not carry hardly anything.

Then, several years ago, my family was off-roading with my parents when we came upon a dry river crossing in the middle of nowhere. About half way across the large rocks, there was a flat rock that had some initials and a painted mural on it that had a short story on it that said...in summary, that the person who left the mural never met the person (the mural was left for) but he'd never forget him. It was sealed with a type of varnish. Nearby on the hill side was a large heart made up of painted rocks with the same initials in the center of it.

Even though it was very remote, it was only a mile or so (as the crow flies) from a highly-traveled dirt road.

It struck a chord with me and I did some digging on what the heck happened there. Basically, a man who was an engineer (with Honeywell or Motorola...I forget) went out on his own in August a year or two prior to do a little off roading in his Jeep, alone. He apparently got high-centered on a rock in that dry river crossing. He couldn't get his Jeep unstuck and had no way of communicating and had no provisions. He was found deceased near his Jeep a day or two later by some motorcyclists, one of whom was so impacted by the event that he (or she?) left the mural. August in Arizona is hot as hell and unforgiving.

That event changed how I view things. He was just like me...a family man with a wife and kids. If he had a personal locater beacon with him, or at least some water, his kids wouldn't be without their dad today.

My point is not to bag on him...I learned from it and it is part of the reason I carry what I carry.

 

What a tragic and sad story! Like you Sixgunz, I always try to think ahead on what "may" happen no matter the unlikelihood of such an event - I just don't want to be "that guy". Some may scoff and say "overkill" but when it comes to family safety overkill just does not come to mind. I think I possess a good amount of creative thinking to outsmart "situations" but if you don't have the stuff to back up your creative thinking what good does it do you? Thank you for taking the time to relate your story - it is a sad but inspirational one for sure.
