Actually, those are the ones I have and they mount to the frame, not the body. Here's what they look like.

I have and like these. They’re not really designed to be a step, but unless you’re wearing boots or thick-soled shoes you can get your toes in there for a boost up to the roof.

They cause no issues getting in and out of the truck for me. They look good and are unobtrusive and provide enough protection for me so far.

The one thing I dislike about these is that the curved tubes are open on the ends which mean they have the potential to collect water, mud, road grime, salt, etc. I'm experimenting with easy ways to plug them.

These are not sliders as they mount on the body, but they are made to look like one... my guess is it's for the looks only.

These are what I have installed (Toyota part numbers PT22889191 and PT22889190), they work for what I need. Frame mounted, comparatively light-weight, enough to protect from large rocks on desert roads

I just ordered them from a local dealer. Good price, provide enough protection for what I need. I want to ditch the running boards as they are more of a hindrance and collect tons of mud off road.

It's just curious why the mfg. of these didn't use round tubing for those outer supports. That would have increased the strength of these considerably. The rest of the rail is round tubing, so...

I imagine that any force is going to be applied to the rail vertically from landing on an object, which those flat pieces will take. Perhaps it's weight savings to use those flat pieces rather than tubular supports?

Rock rails look to be the choice. Can they be used as a step? Or are they just body protection? The images don’t really show much to step on. Thanks in advance for any clarity provided. Looking to order soon and just trying to get the details correct. The wife will need something to step up on. I’m not looking to sacrifice clearance, but want a secure footing for her.

They are definitely not a step. You can barely get a foot on them.

The OEM rock rails cannot be used as a step...unless you have really long skinny toes, lol. They are intended as body protection to protect the underside of the door sills from crushing as you lay the vehicle on top of rocks, boulders, stumps, etc. They tuck in real tight against the body, hence, why they cant be used as a step.

If you want rock rails/sliders that function also as a step, youre going aftermarket and a doubling in price...but, you also get that extra utility as a step and many of those aftermarket products will also protect against shopping cart door dings and even some minor side impacts (think tree stumps or trees).

Speaking of side impact, i posted this pic. in another thread. I was doing about 35-40 mph when a Mazda decided to run into the side of me. Very little damage to mine, she was not so lucky.

I just installed the Toyota Product. While not as heavy as others I have used on previous trucks. They are a good choice for me at this point. I can just get my toes in there as long as I am not wearing not boots to step up to the rear tire and roof rack.

They are not a step at all. I did jack the truck up in multiple places along the rails with zero issue. They tuck nicely away and more then likely will not provide great door ding protection. Plus I can get out now without sliding over the old running boards.

Easy installation hardware was included, I cleaned the threads in the frame first as they were filled with mud. Some anti seize on the bolts and sprayed the two mounting surfaces with some fluid film prior to install.

I installed these (rock rails) a couple months ago as well...definitely not usable as a step. Relatively light weight, great "bang for the buck" and perfect for my intended use of the car. They take some heat on the forums, but they seem relatively sturdy.

Install was easy with an extra set of hands, and some simple jack stands. My 4Runner has KDSS and they fit around everything perfectly, no modifications necessary.

I just purchased a 23 trd off road and the "TRAIL RAILS" were included in the Off Road Upgeade Package they look nice and willserve a minute purpose but they are very thin and if you gently lay your truck on them coming off a rock they should be ok but if you drop the full weight they will most likely crush. Just my opinion. As far as a step , they might let a kid get a bare foot in there, that's about it.

If they are body mounted, then you have something different.

I added these after purchasing as well, $250 per side, install in 5 minutes-and like above they clear the KDSS with no issue and will provide the protection I anticipate for the off roading I expect to do
