    Hello everyone,
This is my first post here I apologize for any mistakes. I have a 97 4runner with a 5speed, I thought it was a 98 for the past 20 years but the manufacture tag I just looked at says built in 97. She has had a hard life but still is a good truck. I fried my engine wire harness with a bad regulator switch out, that ran 16v through the system. There are melted and exposed wires. I looked for a replacement harness but they are discontinued ( part # 82121 3D421) and hard to find for the 5 speed. I plan on removing the harness and rewiring the melted parts, other wise maybe order a custom harness. But, the first problem is getting the harness out. I've got most of it out.
I started on the passenger side, removed glove box, climate control, unplugged from connections and got through the fire wall into the engine bay. I made it all the way around, removing plastic connectors, unplugging connections, unbolting chassis ground, unbolted fuse box.
The problem is that I can't figure out how to get the driver side part of the harness, to the fuse box, out and past the fire wall????
I found this picture deep in some forum that shows the wire location.

98s would have been built in the fall of 97 to the summer of 98. Your VIN will provide the definitive answer.

There is a manufacturer date stamp sticker in the driver side door area.

You are either at the tail of 97 or a very early 98. Your VIN has a date code in it and will tell you exactly.

Yeah, I think it probably is a 98. Either way, it is the same problem I think. Still have to figure out how to get the wire out....

Well, I guess I'll update this post for anyone that has this issue in the future. Making some progress, had to remove the clutch pedal (stick shift) to access plugs, got most of them, did have to cut 3 but I think it is because of a previous repair job. Now, its starting to rain so I'll have to see if I can get all the plugs past the engine bay port probably tomorrow.

Got it out. The first thing was to remove the battery then all the other components. I labeled most wires as I disconnected them. Here is the harness out of the truck and also here is where I noticed the problem. The melted part was running across the top of the frame, right over the fan. So, I could see it was melted from right where the hood latch is.
