    Hi Guys and Gals

Retired after 40 years working in the oil patch (pipeline construction). Decided to treat myself with what I consider my favorite 4WD. Have a 2022 TRD currently in route, and is suppose to be in port around the 15th of Sept.

Looking forward to many nice mountain and back country drives.

I may be looking for a front brush guard that doesn't cover the sensor window, so may be asking for recommendations.

    Later
    Gregg

Hi - what dealer did you use? Do you feel confident in the order process - want to order one as well - good price?
    Thanks,
    Jim

Hi Jim. We used Pederson Toyota in Fort Collins, CO. We actually started looking for a Highlander replacement late last year. Not being in any hurry at the time, we choose different dealers on different weekends. Jeeps, Nissans, Ford, Chevy and Dodge, and just kept coming back to the 4Runner. We then decided on the TRD. By this time the TRD we test drove was gone, the chip shortage had crept in without us knowing about it, and we thought we'd just wait a month or two for one to show up. Well it never did. So we went back to Pederson and just ordered it. We got ordered the add on's we wanted, and put a $1000 down on it. Guaranteed price, the same you'd get now I think if you go on the Toyota site and "Build Your Own". I have liked buying vehicles from CarMax because they have always been what I've wanted, and the sticker price is what it is, no haggling!! I checked the CarMax site and used 4Runners were/are listed for more then the new one we've ordered, and they've had up to 17,000 miles on them for the same model.............

The dealer did warn us it could be a couple months before ours was built due to demand and chip supplies. We only ended up waiting about a month before he called and said they'd received notice it would be built starting on a Wednesday, a couple weeks ago. He then called and said it was complete and was in preshipping. Now it's on the boat and should arrive around the 15th in Seattle. I guess they go to a Toyota plant there for final add on packages, and then he will notify us when it's on the truck headed our way.

Besides the MSRP price, there is also the processing fee of the dealership which is just over $500. We were given all of the final costs in a separate document received after our $1000 was processed.

I was a little concerned right before we got word that it was being built in the plant. I've noticed this at almost all dealerships now, but we were driving through Fort Collins one day and I decided to swing in and see what they had on the lot. They have about a half a block behind the dealership/shop that usually has all of the new cars waiting to be brought up front to be shown. IT WAS EMPTY... We then drove around the lot, and after seeing how things were parked for maximum space, we could only count about 12 to 18 vehicles on the entire lot that were actually new, the rest were all nice looking used cars..... I called our dealer up and asked if there was any chance they'd have to let folks go, or worst case, shut down, and he said no. He said they'd had several meeting earlier in the year, realized what they thought was going to happen, and decided at that time that they would eventually have to depend on folks like us ordering vehicles direct through them. So I guess that made me feel better.

Thanks again for all the info- Been reading up on things and talked with Pederson as well as Mountain States Toyota, what I've learned so far about buying in Colorado is the max sales tax is $525 (I hope this is right) and then the 'doc prep' fee average in CO is $490- I've been talking to Costco, they referred me to a dealer in KC and then Mountain States: the KC dealer won't quote me on a 2022- they say they don't have pricing from Toyota which is odd given that you can build and price one on the web site. The KC dealer did tell me their Costco pricing came out about $2K less than MSRP - 2021 example given over the phone. When it comes to ordering from the dealers in CO both said to expect up to 6 months lead time- I wonder how Toyota is doing with the chip problem? It sounds like allocations come monthly and I would guess that dealers in Colorado get more allocation just due to being a larger market for a 4R- I would guess and it is only a guess that MS Toyota sells more than Pederson? How long did it ultimately take from order till you expect the car?

So the MS dealer will take a $500 deposit - I'm in Kansas so the value of the dealership is not important - just using them (which ever one I end up going with) as a conduit to get one. As you said, patience is a virtue on this deal.

    Thank you,
    Jim

It looks like we started around July 10th is all from the looks of the emails. We were also told it could take up to 6 months, but we may have got lucky.

I also tried the CostCo car program with this one and I was told it was currently unavailable. The company I worked for 40 years still sends me employee discount programs, and one of those was for new car purchase. It also showed up as unavailable , and I think it's because it's looking for current inventory in our zip code area and there just aren't any on the lots............
