    That sucks..:(
I hope it won't be a big deal to replace it.
I have replaced on my Rav4 and I couldn't tell the difference when it comes to paint or the closing.

Ouch! It might be worth trying to locate a hatch in a salvage yard.

Just a deck lid. Probably best to just go through insurance, they’re expensive. I own a salvage yard and I can tell you they are hard to come by, but there are some painted shells available for under $1000 if you are trying to avoid insurance. Go to car-part.com and you can search by distance. Good luck!

yikes. but I'm in the same boat...or truck.
In January, I backed into my son's Trailblazer...not a scratch on his truck, but a nice dent on the Runner. I get one "free" insurance claim every three years and used it to get a new liftgate. Right about the time the paint was good and cured on the new hatch, my son decides to back the Trailblazer into my 4Runner and dents the crap out of the new liftgate. Didn't want to hit insurance again but a new gate, painted by the one place in town I trust is going to be $1700. I tried the 'hot glue and a stick" method and got the dent down a little but damaged the paint, so I'm just rolling around with the battle damage until I can part with the 17 Benjamins.

Sorry. Backing up into a tree is my greatest fear when I'm out in the hills. I've seen it happen several times to others.

I backed over a corvette a couple months ago, because it was so low and close to my rear bumper that I didn't see it in my mirrors. My lift and after-market bumper saved me. Corvette? Not so much. Good news is the driver was a tweaker and he never followed up with my insurance company!

just curious, do you know why they're so hard to find? 4Runners are so common....surely some of them would find their way into salvage yards. I've been trying for months...

Great question. What happens is when these vehicles get wrecked, they are bought back by insurance companies and then sent to salvage auctions. Because 4runners are so valuable and in high demand, they are purchased at a higher price than a scrap yard wants to pay by collision shops and then fixed and resold. The left over ones that are not going to be fixed are purchased by salvage yards, and due to limited quantities, the prices are jacked up!

Dang, good to know but sucks for us who may need parts someday.

Sounds like people shopping for a used 4Runner better look at the title before committing to purchase to ensure it's not a salvaged title.

The sheet metal on these must be terribly thin, cause that damage looks like you were going fairly fast which I'm guessing you weren't.

    Sorry for your mishap OP.

Was that a full replacement or a repair? My wife was just rear ended in June and it was almost triple that for replace the back hatch, glass(Toyota paid for that since they dropped it and it broke) rear bumper and ladder and her damaged was way less than that lol.

You ought to get a quote from a local independent auto body shop.
They may be able to pull those dents. Dealer service is expensive.

+1. @Nutmegtheref get another quote. It might be a bit cheaper.

I agree about getting another quote. But, nobody is pulling those dents out. It's going to take hours of body work.

That sheet metal is creased, you won't be able to "pop-a-dent" that.

Don’t feel so bad. This was my brand new TRD ORP with less than 1000 miles on it. First brand new vehicle ever! I actually shed a few tears that day. Then realized, everyone walked away okay and **it happens. That’s why we get insurance.

Full replacement. Looks so easy to replace but I've since learned the hatch comes unpainted and without the window and some trim. They will take off what they needed from my current one to use in the new one. Good news is the Grateful Dead sticker on my window will make it onto the replacement! Paint match should be pretty easy since the vehicle is new with no fading yet.

There is no way to repair the existing hatch and make it look good. Vehicle has 2800 miles on it. I'm fine with paying my deductible and letting insurance cover the cost to repair it right.
