We waited about 45 mins. once to get the oil changed on our Tacoma. When we made appts. to get oil changes the dealership was pretty good about getting the vehicle "in & out" in a timely fashion. The service dept. where we go, is fairly busy, and they told us when appt. was made to be there 15 mins. early. Haven't had the long wait happen yet... yet, not saying it can't happen. This is probably a variable from dealership to dealership, some care... some don't. There are 2 dealerships where we live, and we are an equal distance between the 2, when 1 drops the ball, we'll try the other one. As far as "free" oil changes... you might as well take them, that's probably the only free thing you'll get from them.

Pinstripes, lots of em. Plus a couple dents.
I'm enjoying early retirement, we take 2 cars when getting services done at the dealer, and go shopping.
I love my Toyota dealer as they have free sodas, bottled water, bottle ice tea, and Jimmy John's sub sandwiches around lunch time.
Plus FOX News on 1 of the 2 TV's in the waiting area.

The online scheduling system allows the dealer to plan their work for the day. There are vehicles in line before you. Sometimes those services go over their allotted time.

We briefly owned a 2017 VW Jetta. The VW dealer was shit show. Old crumbling building, no food or drinks for those waiting on service. No TV's.

You being 80 years old, what's your hurry?

I thought about this some more. The treated this way statement. When someone isn’t valuing your time, they are not showing respect for you. And by the sounds of it, there are a good number of folks allowing this disrespect towards them, and even some sounds like the expect it as a general practice.

WE HAVE THE POWER if we so chose to use it as a whole society. When one person stands up and walks, they are being an jerk but when a bunch do it, we have a movement, when every one does it, we have changed the expectations. Reminds me of Alice’s Restaurant.

Yes, sometimes shit happens, then the service providers should talk to you about this, and it should not be the norm.

and it shouldn’t matter if your 20 or 90, everyone’s time is important.

If you get rid of your 4R for a Ford, better be prepared to spend quite a bit more time at the dealership service department. For more than just oil changes.

Hate to say it but you are in the minority if you think the masses are going to stop going to a dealership because of the wait time.

Again I'm not supporting the dealerships I've never taken any of my vehicles there for anything other than warranty. But don't hold your breath for change.

Interesting Thread. The dealership I purchased my 21' ORP from (as well as previous 10' FJ Cruiser), has always been good. I would schedule an appointment for a oil/filter change, tire rotation, multi-point check. Would arrive about 10 minutes early. Usually in and out within an hour. One time I waited about an hour and forty-five minutes. But the Service adviser mentioned at about the half-way point it would be a bit longer because they were short-handed. (probably tough finding people for just oil changes since they are being paid not to work lately). And that was OK. He was just up front and honest. And that won't bother most people. I'm sure some dealership service departments are run better than others.

I used to do most all maintenance myself. And still can. But at 71 I don't crawl under the the vehicles like I used to. LOL But top side, I'm still OK with doing for a while longer. But I let the dealership change the oil because I want the tires rotated also. Getting the 4R up on 4 jack stands for just a tire rotation is a PITA. LOL

This common backlog at dealerships and independent shops for routine maintenance is likely what prompted the birth of the now famous (infamous?) Quick 10-Minute Oil Change locations. Of course, after the first couple years, the "10 Minute" portion of the sign disappeared. LOL And, we all probably know to NEVER take any of our vehicles to one of these outfits. We've all had/heard the stories.

The dealerships I use Toyota, Ford and RAM, two of them have "Fast Lane" oil change departments. You make your appointment and they do a fast oil change. Never waited longer than thirty minutes for a oil change plus rotation. Fifteen or less for just the oil change. At the Ram dealer, I think they've seen me go through the free donuts while I wait and they would hurry up :)

For Toyota, we make an appointment for the morning and just leave it all day. That dealership is a mess, but so is the other one close by.

    Hey moleman,
Talk about being a dick....you are a total axxhole.
I don't think my expectations were unreasonable.
I have bought over 25 brand new cars in my lifetime.
Never had this kind of service or lack thereof from any other dealer.
Went somewhere else today....in and out in 50 minutes.
Might even dump the Toyota just because...

My free and unsolicited advice is to adjust your expectations. Dealers aren't quick lube joints. Mine has been pretty good with routine service jobs and I think oil changes are a loss leader for them to get you in the door so it's one of the few jobs they aren't scamming you on. I usually allow for a couple hours. If you want it faster go to a jiffy lube or do it yourself.

Surprised you joined a 4Runner forum - you don't seem very interested in the vehicle.

You seem to have a sense of entitlement and want them roll out the red carpet for you when you have an appointment.

If you didn’t throw a tantrum like a 3 yr old and ran away, I bet the dealer would have finished around the same time as the other place you went. Like everyone here said, dealers usually finish sooner than their estimated time. They have to estimate extra time so dicks like you don’t flip out and demand some sort of compensation in case it takes a little longer.
