I just got a Rhino Rack with CXB legs. 3 out of 4 of the feet don’t fit all the way around. 1 of them fits perfectly. I’ve driven around the neighborhood but nervous to take it in the freeway. It seems like the whole setup is snug and tight on the rails.

I did some searching and some people have the same issue while others don’t. I called Rhino Rack and they said it’s normal.

Makes me a bit uneasy either way and I just wanted to see if anyone else has the same issue. And if so, is that thing still on your roof and not in someone’s windshield?

There was at least one guy on the this forum that experienced a departure of the entire rack while driving, with all contents attached.

I also believe he was running cxb legs. Let me see if I can
can find who it was and update this post (unless someone beats me to it).

I was considering the rhino rack, but got a bit pissed hearing reports of the recommended mounts not fitting right. I think there are other mounts (sxc?) that others say fit better.

Then again, I have heard others say the cxb mounts work if you tighten them down in an alternating pattern and really tight.

i wouldnt drive that rack around with the mounts in that condition.

Whoa. That does NOT sound good. Thanks for letting me know.

I’ve been looking at the SX legs and I think I might switch them out. Or just suck it up and get the backbone rails. My gut is telling me to just avoid these CXB legs. I’ve tried tightening them but I’m afraid of damaging my stock rails. Additionally, these things arent getting any tighter and still stuck in that position. It sucks when things just don’t work

yeah, i dont like the feeling of having to keep tightening. I always expect a cracking sounds somewhere. It sucks that rhino rack says this is normal. They have a responsibility to ship this out with mounts that work. Or at least be able to tell you which mounts will work.

Yes, I was running the RhinoRack with CXB legs. I had one leg fail while I was in the Alabama Hills, and then the entire rack came off when I was further down the road toward Death Valley. It seems the vibration while I was in the hills caused that first leg to come loose, and I did not tighten any hardware on the racxk for the entirety of my trip until that point - I am led to assume this caused the failure, not necessarily the CXB legs and the gap between the legs and the factory rails.

I ran the setup for 8 months without fail before the departure, and there are many others who have run the setup without issue. In fact, I'm the only one who has experienced this to my knowledge, so statistically, it is far more likely it was a result of user error on my part rather than equipment failure. I think if you were to check your hardware before and after particularly bumpy trails, you'll be fine. That being said, I am currently sourcing the parts of the rack that were destroyed, and I will be remounting the rack with the SX100 legs because they are listed as being made specifically for 4Runner. I've seen photos, and it looks as though they hug the factory rails without a gap. I know I will be more comfortable with this setup, but I do not think anyone running with CXB will have an issue.
