Good afternoon gentlemen, I'm new to this site and wanted to say hello and introduce myself. I just acquired a 93 4runner SR5 V6 4X4 with an automatic transmission and transfer case, which is currently stuck in 4Lo. Here's my question: What would cause the transfer case to remain locked in low range ? I changed the fluids and filter in the automatic transmission and transfer case, and the rear case.

Is it possible that the solenoid in the transfer case could cause it to remain stuck in 4Lo ? Or; is it possible that the valve body is not allowing the new fluid to flow due to dirt particles from the original ATF ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it had not been exercised every month or so they get like that, try working it several times moving back and forth to see if you can get it to free up, be patient. Welcome To the forum.

Can you tell if it IS actually in 4-low. Drive it on some asphalt and see if it wants to skip. Just to rule out that it is not just a dash light.

    Welcome from Arizona!
Have you tried to shift through all gears and from 2 wheel to 4 wheel drive and forwards and backwards from low range to high range? @Doubleduty could be onto something also.

    Thanks for the welcome.

The only engagement of the transmission is when the shifter is in 4Lo. When the shifter is in 2WD or 4Hi, nothing happens. No Forward or Reverse. I do appreciate the suggestions though, you never know what will work.

It's definitely stuck in 4Lo, the transmission shifts as it should. I am fairly certain that it has something to do with either the solenoid or the valve body, it doesn't take much to clog the ports / channels in it. Or I could be wrong, that's why I'm asking for information about the automatic transfer case. I've been driving a 97 Ranger 4X4 for the past 11 years, so I've gotten used to working on Fords with an ele
    ctric shift motor.

First, check the linkages to ensure it's shifting. You should be able to do that manually with a screwdriver up underneath.

That's a simple place to begin. If you can confirm it's really shifting the transfer case, then I'd look at the other parts that are likely stuck in place.

    Welcome from Texas.

I think it might be the actuator.

Just so you know, it doesn't have an actuator. There are two wires that I haven't been able to figure out where they connect, one is green/ white, the other is brown/black. According to a Toyota wire diagram, they are supposed to connect to the transfer position switch and the A.D.D.. I'll find it eventually.

Vacuum Switching Valve - that actuates the vacuum to the ADD may have gone south. It's located on the passenger inner fender well, if I recall correctly..

I found a custom 4x4 shop that specializes in Toyota and Jeep customization. The owner said he'd take a look at it and give me his advice, I'm trailering it there on Tuesday. Hopefully it'll be good news, I sure could use some of that.

Well, the shop I took it to couldn't find the problem. I found a 95 4runner parts vehicle that matches mine, except the year. I'm waiting for the owner to get back to me, hopefully soon. It'll make figuring out the wiring much easier. Time will tell !
