Talk me into or out of a 2wd runner. My old one was 4wd, and I rarely used it. A few times for snow, a few times for driving in fields or unfinished developments. I’ve got a lead on a nice 2020 model that’s otherwise perfect, but it’s a 2wd. It seems almost a sacrilege to get 2wd but would it handle the light use I’d need?

Makes no sense to me. Get it if you want it, or don’t.

Yes it would, with probably slightly better mpg’s.

If you don't need 4WD, get a FWD Highlander.

If you don't need 4x4, then I would get something that gets better mpg. Personally, I would never buy a 2wd 4Runner.
    Doesn't make sense.

Probably be harder to sell if and when you decide too. I would get something with better gas millage before a two wheel drive 4Runner

In the bay area, 4Runners are slim pickings on dealer lots. The only 4Runners I see on dealer lots are TRD Pros with $10k over MSRP and 2WD SR5s.

Since you mention you have snow in your area, I would look for a 4WD 4Runner. I live in an area where we have winter driving conditions and see quite a bit of snow, so 4WD comes in handy.

    I have 2wd 4runner and 4wd tacoma.
Price was right on the 2wd so I bought it. It limits you a bit (2wd). gas savings isnt worth consideration. very minimal.

Having 2wd always makes me have to think ahead about which vehicle I take. And I often have that sinking feeling in my stomach.....will something go wrong here and I wish I had 4wd?
Ive been on reportedly easy dirt camping trail when there is an unexpected big rut/ditch made by those evil Tacoma big tire owners.

If you are 100% a mall driver, 2wd is perfect. If you may go in snow or camping/beach/fishing/hunting, even once in a blue moon, just get the 4wd and eliminate the stress.

it really depends on how you use your 4RNR you can get the 2WD and add a rear locker and you be good to go. good luck
I say this after reading that you hardly need 4WD for what you said you used it for

Ooooh. I never even considered adding a rear locker.
Wonder how much that is, if its difficult and what, if any, downsides. Will have to look into that idea.

I had a Prerunner Taco and almost got stuck a few times, once was in a gravel parking lot on a slight slope. Made me never to want a 2wd again.

In todays market that's not high, that's better than market average. Whether it's worth that or not is a personal decision, however...

Gosh, I don't know if I could buy one Pro for nearly the price of two SR5's. Hard for me to rationalize.

I agree, in todays market. Plus lunar rock color. If I would be looking for one, I would buy it on the spot, and never look back' before It's gone.

I totally get what you're saying. But there's people out there who buy $200k sports cars. $53k is a downpayment. It's all relative.

Had a 2wd 2004 Nissan Frontier briefly. 1st time I got stuck in the snow, I though to myself - well that was a dumb idea.
I won't make that mistake again.

You're not going to see much if any improvement on MPG's from a 2Runner. It's still a brick going down the road.

Dont quote me on this, but I think I remember hearing that 2wd runners come with a limited slip diff.

Just buy a 4x4 and be done with it. You can set the whole deal up from your phone, then buy a plane ticket and go get it. Easy peasy. :)

OP probably should buy a 4wd.
I fell into a killer deal on my 18’ 4runner 2wd. Not trading it in. i have a good 4wd tacoma too.
These ideas for some small offroad improvement on my 2wd have been appreciated.

Of course if an individual has a long commute, a Prius is a great option.

    Oops, I did it.

New camrys are kinda hot….the Corolla 6 speed manual too.
To the OP. Not gonna lie, 2wd 4runners miss the point. They arent really more efficient. And you lose the benefit of 4wd on those rare occasions. And you definitely lose on the resale value end of things.
