Cold Air Intake

Looking to install a cold air intake for my 16 4 runner.
Any suggestions?

 

You're about to be inundated with "don't!" and "I got X intake, you should buy it too" and "noise maker".

Might as well slap on a fart can muffler too.

 

All 4Runners already come with a cold air intake.

 

Is that because of induction noise?

I gotta admit, I’m a sucker for that throaty, snarly, intake sound. And for the longest time I thought the noise was universally accepted as cool, not ricer.

Apparently, somewhere along the line that changed. I remember getting laughed off a forum for FZ1000 motorcycles when I asked if there was a way to get some more intake growl out of my machine. I got totally smacked down by ricers! Seriously?!? If anybody would have appreciated that noise, I thought it would have been japanese muscle bike enthusiast.

I didn’t like that bike anyway…

 

Stock is cold air. I suggest AFE if you really must swap the box for more noise.

Help a novice here. As long as this subject came up (again) LOL, what force causes the Toyota OEM unit, as well as any after market units to make more intake noise ? Thanks.

 

They put a whistle in the intake plenum. Just kidding, I have no clue.

Aftermarket units remove baffles and/or make the intake a hot air intake which makes the go fast noise without the actual going fast part. You could remove the two chambers on the OEM intake and get some more noise.

 

Thanks for your reply. Reason I asked: I have one of the Toyota Cold Air Intake's (new) less the filter, that I traded to a guy in an even swap for something I had no use for. Still new in the box. So, I was considering using this with a standard paper filter.
But I would not want any additional noise. Obviously, it would just be for engine compartment dress-up. So that's why I was asking what item(s) in the kit cause the extra unwanted noise. Maybe it can be altered to sound like OEM stock ?

 

I was thinking more along the lines that both do nothing.

Hot Air Intake

 

Most stock intake systems are carefully engineered control intake airflow to maintain high volume of available air, while at the same time slowing it down to increase it’s pressure before being sucked into the engine. This, along with purpose built baffles to control resonances, result in very little induction sound. You just cant hear the air rushing into the engine with wide open throttle, leaving just the mechanical sounds of the engine.

In contrast, most CAI are just a simple tube and an open filter with none of that engineering. Crack open the throttle, and you’ll hear straight down to the intake valves. Heck, a common mod for old “muscle bikes” like my old zrx1100 was to rip the airbox out, and put pod filters directly on the carbs.

The reality is that most stock systems do a better job controlling airflow into the engine, resulting in better overall performance.

But of course, stock wont make you feel like you’re driving one of these

I think we all know people love to hate CAI mods on 4Runner. I pieced together the factory kit and love it. I gained 1mpg (documented with Fuely app) and the sound makes me smile when I press on the go pedal. 5 more years at it will pay for itself! lol.

I say if its something YOU want to do, Go For It! It is a worthwhile mod in my opinion.

Just pull the baffles and plug the tube. This will make the engine sound less like a rice grinder.

 

I have the TRD cai and I love it But it’s throaty especially over 3k rpm and it really dresses up the engine compartment as for power increase not really

Did the same and also had the same results.

 

if you do CAI you should also think about doing Exhaust its a good idea to do them together just my thoughts
make sure your what CAI you get has the emission sticker for when you need to smog it well in Cali you need it

 

Hey it is Your 4Runner you can Do what you want to Your 4Runner So if you decide to go with the Toyota TRD unit the above Part Numbers are good and Bam whole sale parts has them for even less than listed above.....

Just go to Autozone or similar auto parts store like Napa and get 1/4 inch ID Hose and 1/4 inch OD hard fittings also Lowes for the hose however I have not seen much in the way of hard fittings there but look by all means, As for the plug Lowes carries a large assortment of plastic tapered hole plugs that you can press in with a dab of silicone sealant around it.

I've split the difference and ordered a 3/16" brass hose barb for the nipple and a 3mm tubing.

Local auto stores never have these small parts anymore, just drove to five!

Yeah I been Noticing that more and more so since I have installed 6 of the Toyota CAI for other people I tend to get way more than I need from the local industrial hose and Hydraulic hose center that carries everything.

 

Anyone use TRD intake with AEM Dryflow filter? What do you think?
