New owner here. I bought a 343k mile 2001 limited and am trying to replace all the stuff that has been neglected.

The rear drive shaft is the Cardan type and the front u joints and swivel bearing are junk. I'm not seeing alot of options for replacements.

Hopefully there are some of you that bought ragged out rigs and have run into the same thing.

I would appreciate hearing about your experiences!

None. Bone Stock. EXCEPT: Brushguard, tow hitch, both welded to the frame. It's good to have friends and a fully equipped garage!
Well, I've had to replace the U joints on my pickup twice since I bought it in 88, but never on the 4Runners. I bought them from the dealership, and I think they were about $30.00 each. They were pretty easy to replace, but we had a nice press out at work, so that helped a lot :)

I grease the heck out of the 4Runners every spring and fall, and haven't had a bit of trouble out of either one. A little grease on the undercarriage, but it's a small price to pay, IMO. I did have to replace the CV joints on the 87 4Runner, but that wasn't that bad. I'm sure the 99 will need the CV replaced eventually, but they still move smoothly.

Sorry not a lot of help, but the best I can offer.
    Pat☺

In case anyone searches this looking for an answer, I ended up ordering a new driveshaft from wholesaleimportparts.com. It has replaceable U joints and was a direct bolt in. Took a test drive and was took it up to 70mph with no vibrations. $385 shipped. I'm gonna call that fixed.

On to fixing the front end....
